I don't see a problem with it using Proton. The same reason as always: a single build for the developer to test. And yes, that also applies if Steam Deck is the only target.Doesn't change the fact it's pretty goofy imo. It's like making a Switch exclusive by developing a game for Android and relying on translation layers, sounds like you're only overcomplicating the process and adding another layer of failure.

Think there are a few companies coming out with ARM64 CPU's, and NVIDIA is one of them I think?
Apple has the M1-3 custom ARM chips as well of cause.
I don't really know if this is a CPU or GPU improvement on ARM chips or how they work. I know mobiles have an additional iGPU added to the ARM CPU's but have no idea how this works under Desktop.

I checked.
despite what the title itself, and what the developer said: it actually relies on "ISteamInput" to handle Motion Sensors. it actually works on all Controllers that can support Motion Sensors, including Steam Deck and the likes.
for some reason: Geert Verhoeff doesn't use the Opt-in System to forcefully use Steam Input for all controllers.

I have playing it with gamepad too. What's great with the interface when played with gamepad is that the radial hotspot thing eliminates the traditional pixel hunting. Downside is that there's sometimes so many things around you that important things are easy to miss. If there's many things to interact within the screen, the furthest things away from you might not be in the list.
It gets bit intense, so the save and quit after each chapter is usually welcome option. Luckily game keeps notes about interesting things, so refreshing your memory is always possible.
So far it looks like it really was worth the wait. I might have played the demo back in 2024 or so, e.g long time ago.

I would be very surprised if there's no similar amount of libs provided by some Snap package your Steam package is depending upon.
Steam snap relies on
gaming-graphics-core22
(which snaps kisak-fresh) and gtk-common-themes
(the latter one is shared among several snaps).

I don't understand the bad vkd3d-proton performance everybody is complaining about. There are some dx12 games like kcd2 that perform very similar to or even better than windows, and many dx11 games that perform worse on linux. There doesn't seem to be a divide between dxvk or vkd3d-proton, games generally run worse on linux than windows using nvidia hardware.

I know of two reasons: Valve recommends other ways, and when you're doing support on the Steam forums, problems due to Snap and Flatpak keep popping up.
Of course, if you know what you're doing and can help yourself, use whatever floats your boat.

And it doesn't explain, why this is in any way "preferred"

Really? All of a sudden 169 packages are something that goes without saying while at the same time snap packages are the source of all evil because they are oh so resource hungry.
And no: My rig has plenty of mass storage - still I'm in no need for 169 packages. And I can still remember it once got me into dependency hell when an i386 package was apparently out of sync with its AMD64 sibling...

The host system is obfuscated somewhat because a different root system is used. But this doesn't matter because it doesn't use much from the host except the kernel (whose version Steam exactly knows).
By poiuz, 4 Aug 2025 at 6:36 pm UTC
Steam uses a number of commands from the running operating system to look at your hardware/software configuration (graphics card, window manager, IPC mechanism, etc.). All of these things are "obfuscated" when you run inside a container (snap, flatpak, etc.), which means that Steam is fed (somewhat) incorrect information about your system. What exactly are you referring to? The Steam Flatpak has access to all these information because almost all of the device tree is shared, only a small part is filtered due to security. It knows exactly what hardware I'm using, which window manager, etc..

@Caldathras While it's very true that fascists are insinuating themselves into the whole Anglosphere (and far beyond), I think it's an overstatement to say they're a bigger problem in countries where they have not actually seized power. While the US system of "checks and balances" is not yet clinically dead, it is showing few signs of successfully checking or balancing, and the recent budget bill included a massive appropriation to hire so many people into the Gestapo ICE that it will have more personnel than the FBI.
As to Collective Shout . . . I've watched as activist groups demanded things for plenty of decades. The general rule is, they never get the things they demand unless (1) It was going to happen anyway, or (2) There is an upsurge in protest so massive that it is shutting down society, or occasionally (3) Nobody cares about the demand so what the heck. And that last one is rare; the default is "give them nothing, don't encourage them". Some Australian weirdly reactionary feminist group I'd never heard of is not in itself going to force a big transnational company to do anything. A couple days ago I speculated that it was all lawyer stuff happening at mid levels, but I think I was wrong--this has been too widespread for that. I think they must have decided that there is strong popular/political backing for this kind of thing, and/or there's some high-ups who are into it.

I just hope they don't shove all that garbage into my library like they did with that one charity bundle for Gaza. Having my library ruined like that really soured my day.
EDIT: Got the $60 bundle and they do it like the old bundles where all the content is hidden until you download it, so nothing to worry about for people who like keeping their library organised.

Frankly, I think that recommending that users avoid Proton Experimental might be a good idea. The Steam client defaulted to it for me when I first set things up. Not knowing any better, I left it as it was. When Experimental shifted from the 9 base to the 10 base, nearly all my games stopped launching. When I reset their prefixes to the last stable Proton based on 9, they all started working again.
This is the same reason I stopped using the system Wine via the launchpad PPA. When it shifted to the next major version, it tended to break a number of my game prefixes. It's better to have a Wine/Proton version that does not change automatically.

Dude. Have you even been paying attention to what's going on here? The activist group claiming responsibility for this is Collective Shout, a group of feminist extremists from Australia. It's not the Americans this time.
It's "Fascism" by the way, not "Fashism". And believe it or not, the spectre of fascism is a bigger problem in the commonwealth nations than the USA right now. While you've been focusing on the antics in America, they've been sneaking their agendas into Australia, New Zealand, Canada and even the UK. Probably other countries as well ...

Imho the game had serous issues with level scaling everything, monster respawn and a excessive bloat of non-rewarding side quests.
I doubt the remaster will fix this though perhaps I will follow it. Had a few hours of fun with it back then.
