News - Crusader Kings III gets a new major patch and Chapter V expansion pass
By Linux_Rocks, 21 Apr 2026 at 1:14 am UTC

I remember seeing a Crusader Kings II video where the person made the most inbred family line that they could. It ended up breaking down somewhere and they were forced to marry outside their family. lol

I really hope one day that preservation becomes more of a goal for all developers.
I think it's a safe bet that developers of live service games are not much concerned with preservation.

News - KDE Plasma 6.7 gets per-screen virtual desktops and Wayland session management
By clatterfordslim, 20 Apr 2026 at 10:17 pm UTC

Quoting: chrNice. I'm still dreaming about using different desktop backgrounds for each virtual desktop (which I was reminded of when hearing about this virtual desktop update).
Can do that easily in Xfce. It's what I do to remember which workspace I am on, as there is no way to display numbers on screen, like there is in KDE and Cinnamon. Can only show numbers if you have workspace displaying on your panel and rename them from there in Xfce. I will have to try out KDE in VMware and see how Wayland behaves itself now, as all I keep hearing is how good Wayland is, but do people actually use their computers, other than playing games and watching YouTube? Do they make spreadsheets, create stuff, open as many tabs as possible, push their systems to the limit, by having Steam games open whilst rendering or editing video, watching YouTube, browsing the web all at the same time, whilst using Wayland?

I'm just curious that's all, as that is how I spend my time in Xfce. If I feel happy enough with KDE Wayland in a virtual environment I will install it onto real hardware and see how it performs in the real world. I've been on the fence with Wayland, as heard nothing but good things, then the horror stories of it not liking OBS-Studio and other app installs.
Every time I tried Wayland session with either KDE or Gnome, they kept crashing. Though that was some time ago, so does anyone here use their Wayland Linux like I do in X11? Is Wayland really that good now that it does not crash when put under load?

Quoting: TriasParadox's DLC classification is a bit confusing, yes, but "Major" expansion is considered to be bigger then a "Core" one.
Ah, that would make more sense, then. I guess what got me was the last dev diary talking about By God Alone, and also the order in which they were presented today.

That means I kinda got my wish. More depth for trade, and more depth for playing in Europe.

And it seems the issue that regularly drained my treasury is fixed (or I just had a very lucky streak). On the downside, my 61yo character now looks like a shriveled grape, and I had to give up 6 of my 15 holdings due to the domain limit rebalancing. Ah well, it's not like I was attached to most of them anyway.

Source? Link to confirm use of "AI"?
If you pay attention to the video you can differently see the static lighting in a room's background change by the camera angle
Even if they didn't, I wouldn't put it below Spacefarer to use AI in their remasters. They once took someone's demo off of Itch "Zera: Myths Awaken" reskinned and sold it on the Nintendo E-shop as "Lotzo and Ray of Light" as a full game in broken form.

Quoting: kaimanSilk & Silver on the other hand feels like it's deserving to be a core expansion, and so will likely end up too shallow and too separate from existing systems and mechanics.
Paradox's DLC classification is a bit confusing, yes, but "Major" expansion is considered to be bigger then a "Core" one.

Yes, it's also confusing and not reassuring that developers left only two month for a major expansion after the previous one but still, the "trade" expansion is at least planed to be of the same scale as tournaments and Asian expansions (both were "Major" expansions too). And "By God Alone" is supposed to be of the same scale as Khans DLC (another "Core" expansion).

Anyway, I'm very hyped so far. Mostly for trade system but united Chalcedonian Christianity from BGA also scratches my "historical accuracy" itch very much. Will definitely play a campaign at the end of the year.

:).

Quoting: sarmadAnd it's also upgradable, so you can upgrade the memory if you like, though I don't think you'll need to if you're just using it for gaming.
Depending on the game genre 32GB could be necessary. But these are more likely games people would want to play on desktop to see more details than on a far away screen.

I still wounder how easy it is to upgrade since steam machine is also just a common PC, but you do not have any graphics card other than Steam Machines own proprietary design solution. RAM and CPU, sure (on Batch 2 there is only one of two slots used), but how is graphics card build in an how is it cooled? And with Ryzen 5500 the best you can upgrade to CPUs of the same generation. And cooling will be an issue in general for such small devises. You have build in a CPU with 65W and a GPU with 160W. Doubling that amount is possible with 600W quality PSU, but cooling is probably not at that point. And if that is true what @nebadon2025 said, then I would also switch the PSU when upgrading requires more power (I would not even want to run a no name PSU in first place).

News - US operating system age verification bill "Parents Decide Act" gets published
By PlayingOnLinuxphone, 20 Apr 2026 at 6:09 pm UTC

While I am on team "don't "verify age", you probably should look deeper behind the story of systemd. Listen to [the person who actually implemented age on systemd](https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=8bAN4Jam974). Companies that want to make business in USA HAVE to implement it, if they agree with laws or not. That means all the distros maintained by companies do not have much choice. The systemd implementation should keep the control by users and should make sure to implement it in the best way possible (otherwise may 10 companies create 10 different solutions while some are probably worse). And at least on my daily used distro (Debian) the related systemd packages are not even installed by default. It's a package for all kind of personal information. It was weird anyway that such an entry was never implemented (and if so, nobody would have spoken about these days).

You still don't need to agree with that action and personally I think it was not smart to do it right now when laws are still discussed for free software. But I also think there is more drama made then the action actually was. Just pick a distro that does not ship that package (community distros) or uninstall it and your system is as clean as it always was.

You can do that with activities, that's essentially what they're for, workspaces where everything is unique to each space. To be honest, I'm not really sure why KDE sidelines them. They do everything people complain about workspaces not doing. They're intended for workspaces to live inside them, but that's never how KDE presents them.

Wait, that's actually a pretty powerful machine; more powerful than the PS5 Pro if I'm not mistaken. And it's also upgradable, so you can upgrade the memory if you like, though I don't think you'll need to if you're just using it for gaming.

But, why does it look like a portable electric stove? 😁 Still look nicer than the PS5 though in my opinion.

News - Crusader Kings III gets a new major patch and Chapter V expansion pass
By kaiman, 20 Apr 2026 at 4:53 pm UTC

Hm, I'm happy for the patch to be out (and hope it actually fixes the issue I have with my ongoing campaign), but neither of the two expansions have me reaching for my wallet. I guess By God Alone may enrich gameplay in Europe and perhaps some of the changes to the Faith mechanics may apply elsewhere, too, but it's not on the same level as, say, Tournaments or China.

Silk & Silver on the other hand feels like it's deserving to be a core expansion, and so will likely end up too shallow and too separate from existing systems and mechanics.

I'd rather have liked seeing something that deepens an existing system or region (like By God Alone apparently does), with more events, more choice, more variety.

But I'll follow the dev diaries (at least those are almost always fun!) and perhaps let myself be convinced that my fears are unfounded and there's tons of exciting stuff included. No pre-ordering this time, though.

Quoting: grigiI didn't know it even existed :-(

But having the licensing expire after a mere 2 years is ridiculous. Its continued sale will result in continued royalties, I really don't get why :-(

Edit: I read that apparently Paramount/Skydance decided to up Star Trek licensing costs by 2000%
Feels like the "new owners" want to price out the small guy :-(
Not so much that as the entire franchise has long since been driven into the ground and corporate is simply trying to recover anything they can from anywhere.

If we don't slam the door shut on this at the start then we'll never be able to close it later. Simple as.

For the first time in my life I have an opinion on SystemD because. It seems to be the vehicle chosen for this power-grab. Therefore I am switching distros to specifically avoid it.

Typing this on Mint, switching my laptop to MX Linux. Business machine is OpenMandriva, probably also soon to be MX. The machine I'm typing on probably Void.

This thing has insanely cheap Chinese parts inside of it, the motherboard is around 50$'ish. The brand is Jginyue (B450i-Plus/ARGB) I would say avoid this thing if you know what is good for you, these parts are kind of garbage and this thing is insanely over priced for the quality of the parts you get.

Quoting: Stella16GB VRAM and 16GB RAM is an interesting choice, I'm guessing this was conceived before the great RAMCrisis:tm: and they originally planned to launch with 32/16?
Either way it seems like an interesting and capable piece of hardware that should be quite a bit more powerful than the Steam Machine proper and the VRAM should give it considerable longevity
It's using DDR4, so they probably thought that would help, but now those prices have skyrocketed too.
