Overlord, Overlord: Raising Hell and Overlord II (new port!) released on Steam for Linux
By lucifertdark, 28 July 2016 at 12:11 pm UTC

Quoting: Comandante oardo
Quoting: FredOI got these games in a Codemasters Humble Bundle a couple of years ago, and they are currently not downloading. Need to wait for Codemasters to activate them I guess.

I have the same pack with the keys of this game not redeamed.. And I have another codemasters pack from Indiegala...
I wonder if those keys will work
They should work.

If you're talking about the Steam Controller, there is no need when SC Controller exists.

An excellent point! I wonder would itch.io consider incorporating sc-controller into their Linux client?

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, What happens to sc-controller when Steam is launched? It seems like there would be conflicts. Is it necessary to shut sc-controller off before starting Steam?

Excepting Psychonauts, I haven't been particularly interested in Doublefine's catalogue, this newest release included.

Nevertheless, I've always had a warm spot for Doublefine because (Iron Brigade notwithstanding) they've released all their games on Linux. (I've even felt guilty about not buying their game because they were so consistently supportive of the Penguin.)

So they've more than earned a pass on not releasing this one game onto Linux, and I accept their apology as sincere.

I thought this API was a joke. Why the hell someone would support Apple idiocy instead of forcing them to implement vulkan ?

For fuck sakes... *throws hands in the air*.

Metal was released Jun 2015, Vulkan spec released Feb 2016, drivers hitting now.
Dx11.2 in 2014.
OpenGL 4.5 released in 2014, technically on par with dx11.

So while I can understand Vulkan wouldn't have been viable. But opengl would have been more than enough, and provides for 3 platforms. What special junk did they use from dx11 that isn't possible in GL? And they expended effort to update the engine for not one, but TWO vendor locked, single platform api.

Fucking API vendor lock-in... if a developer is using DirectX for no particular reason over any cross platform API and library, then fuck'em.

As for Apple, fuck them too. And fuck these guys. And that person over there.

Guys, I agree that Vulkan/MoltenVK is the right way to go for maximum coverage, but MoltenVK in particular is barely out of the oven. I'd be surprised to see any commercial venture even touch it at this point unless they've already got their product running on Vulkan. And the Vulkan infrastructure (tooling, documentation etc.) has a long way to go to match the competition. We'll get there, quite soon I think, but we're not there yet. Of course there's also the fact that platform coverage isn't exactly the primary concern for many developers.

Epic Games founder thinks Microsoft will essentially break Steam in later versions of Windows 10
By 1mHfoksd1Z, 28 July 2016 at 8:09 am UTC Likes: 1

I believe this to be an exaggerated prediction but it does have a grain of truth.

Anyway... a huge number of Linux users came to Linux from Windows because they had enough of MS's shenanigans... if they continue to close Win10 even more, then they will only lose users, which will migrate to Linux.
Now I'm not saying that is going to cause a market shift, far from it, but they will eventually see a decrease in their user base. Their growth has already slowed down considerably compared to other OSes.
There's already a lot of controversy going on around Win10, not much unlike the one around Win8, which they tried to get away from... they must be careful with what they do next or people will lose their faith and trust in the OS they are used to and will consider it's alternatives, Linux and Mac, which would be more than happy to get those users for themselves.

Well, since you asked for suggestions I have a few (huge fan of what Itch is doing so I browse it a lot).

First, a game to keep an eye on:
https://darkfalzx.itch.io/mystik-belle

The game's already on Linux for both Steam and the Humble Store (I have a copy due to supporting the Legend of Iya Kickstarter - dev gave everyone free copies of that and Ultionus as an apology for taking so long), but the Itch version's delayed until he can figure out how to use Linux since he doesn't want to upload the old version there while the shiny new Windows version's in display. In my opinion it's a must-buy once the Linux version's uploaded there as well (though you can always buy now and use the Steam key to play it there, but that's up to you), and I'll probably be buying it a second time from there just to support the guy.

If you want a game you can play now, though, try GLADIABOTS:
https://gfx47.itch.io/gladiabots

You'll need to start it with "-force-opengl" for now due to an Unity bug that's plaguing a crapton of games there (some of which have too many glitches with that on to recommend right now, like Lieve Oma - keep an eye on that one in case it's fixed, btw). That said, it's a neat concept: program AIs to do stuff with a node-based system. It's in alpha stage, though, so make sure to post suggestions and report bugs if/when you find 'em.

And finally, I've yet to test this one with the Itch client but it's a neat HTML5 game:
https://naka.itch.io/tofu-tower

Roguelike dungeon crawler with collectible card elements. A bit rougher around the edges compared to the other games I mentioned here, but still pretty fun, in my opinion.

I don't get it.. If they're going to the effort of using Metal, why not just jump straight to Vulkan. There is a project called MoltenVK which will make Vulkan work nicely with Metal.

Well the good thing is, Vulkan works on both windows and linux.
But Mac still needs there Metal.
And I also think, like Liam is saying in the article, vulkan probably came out when the game was far in development.

I don't usually like to plug non-free projects behind a paywall, but the MoltenVK people were at Siggraph this year to talk about their Vulkan port to Metal.

Thanks for the real example of how lock-in API taxes developers and prevents Linux release. That's exactly why Apple and MS don't want to support Vulkan. Anti-competitive crooks. They only change their tune when they are outnumbered. So Vulkan will have really hard time I feel. WebGL succeeded only because browsers which are standard compliant beat IE into the dust. Now MS plays nice and you don't hear them pushing all their ActiveX / Silverlight trash. Not sure how that can be fixed for graphics.

goVEGAN

Completely off-topic, but I was 100% vegan for 1 year and 2 months.

Learned a lot, like how to make main courses that tasted good without meat or dairy, where to find good tofu in town. But one word of warning for heavy all-day coffee drinkers like myself, it hampered with my ability to absorb elemental (plant) iron - more than my vitamin C intake was making up for.

Now I'm a partial vegan, I still make all my vegan dishes, and I can go pure vegan for a 1-5 days on occasion. But I also swear by sardines and herring added to that, along with skim milk and eggs. And once in a great while going full "suicide by food" mode with brats/pizza/bacon etc - mainly out with friends.

Quoting: Mountain Man
Quoting: neowiz73I blame the Mac vs PC commercials for starting the paradigm of calling all windows based systems "PCs".
It started long before that. "PC" has always been synonymous with Microsoft in one way or another for decades.

not as much, because before the commercials mainly I remember Windows PCs being thing, because Macs were being sold in stores and were referred to Mac PCs vs Windows PCs. But Steve Jobs wanted to make a distinct difference between the two with the commercials by simply stating Macs were *Macs* and Windows PCs were just PCs.
I don't think I've ever heard a Mac referred to as a "Mac PC". What I do remember back in the day is that "PC compatible" was a big selling point for IBM clones, which basically meant they were compatible with IBM PCs meaning they could run MS-DOS. And for whatever reason when Microsoft and IBM parted ways, the term "PC" stuck with Microsoft, probably not by accident.

PS4 does not use OpenGL, but if the internet is correct (hmmm, now that I say this out loud ...) the api was derived from it.
