Quoting: kazriko
Quoting: lidstahMine's really messy right now (a truckload of work), and as it's Saturday, will be cleaned later this afternoon. Sorry for the potato phone camera quality…

(deleted the pic link in the quote, as it's already on page 6)

That's a bit like my work desktop. Two 2048x1152 monitors in portrait mode for editing source code with a 2560x1440 on the left for references.

Indeed, portrait mode monitors are really, really nice for editing or reading stuff. I'm a sysadmin so I don't code that much (except some bash or perl scripts), but my workflow is like this on my main window group (StumpWM):

* Left screen: everything "communication related": IRC/IM/Mail
* Left portrait screen: Editing scripts, checking git logs, checking devs code, pushing in preproduction/production, various ssh sessions to preproduction/production servers in tmux sessions
* Right portrait screen: Web browser and zathura (pdf and such) for documentation or chill out
* Rightmost screen: monitoring

On my "steam" group:

* Left screen: IRC/IM/Mail
* Left portrait screen: top (small) split: $ watch -n10 sensors (I'm a bit paranoid with my CPU temperature :p), bottom split: main tmux session, HATop on my main client's front servers, so if something goes wrong while I'm gaming I can take action fastly.
* Right portrait screen: web browser
* Rightmost screen: steam UI, games.

I'm quite fond of StumpWM+windowtags plugin :)

Open source Morrowind game engine OpenMW releases 0.39.0

Quoting: denyasisHow is the mod support? I still play Morrowind via wine with a lot of mods and utilities (FPS optimizer, wyremash, etc - could never get MGE to work...)

I'm not sure about this.

I've never used mods the first time I played Morrowind (on Windows) many years ago.

And it's now I'm playing on Linux when I first use mods : Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 expecifically.

I know that packs not merelly "mods" (in the content file sense only) but includes utilities and patches to the Windows Morrowind.exe file that extend somewhat its functionality and changes some game mechanics.

But even if I needed Windows to run Overhaul installer, I'm playing it exclusively on Linux, with OpenMW so I can't tell you what differences are.

And trying to compare the two versions could be tedious : the savegame files were incompatible between vanilla and OpenMW. So trying to compare things on advanced game, far from the start, will imply replay the game to that particular point, just to see if efect X (only seen far from start) applies to OpenMW.

My guess is it lacks the mechanics thing.

I am afraid not. Runescape -is- the closest thing to a mainstream MMO Linux has available, but this just shows how desperately Linux needs more MMOs. It's not anywhere near being a major title, even with the most generous of imaginations.

I started playing today (with the old client) using runescape-launcher, and I'm so far impressed. It's certainly feature rich and fun.

Quoting: ThePierrasseWow Vulkan is just murdering OpenGL

While this is all nice for one particular game, and I'm sure there will be performance benefits across the board anyway, it's a bit early for such a generalised statement. Especially when the OpenGL version is of such importance. At least on my rig, Talos is using GL3.0, GLSL 130. Modern OpenGL (i.e GL4.5) would allow much greater performance improvements.

Again though, that they have something nicer with Vulkan is good. Just don't expect it everywhere.

nope, it wouldn't for 3 reasons

1. only NVidia implements it well. just try looking trough all the threads where developers tried AZDO. and then there is the problem where Apple is at old GL and to make it worse, their GL is terrible which is what forces developers to go with older one
2. AZDO < Vulkan since it only covers part of functionality in Vulkan
3. AZDO is even harder to grasp/write than Vulkan

face it, GL problems will never be fixed since most vendors focused on Vulkan

Lolololol seriously?
Why most F2P games tend to screw the QoL instead of looking for creative ways of earning money?

Nonetheless, it amazes me how Jagex has managed to continously evolve Runescape to keep up with the times.

Stellaris is now available to pre-order & a new trailer
By Segata Sanshiro, 16 April 2016 at 10:01 pm UTC

Yeah, I agree they don't always feel as complete as when a couple of expansions come out, but I had great experiences with EU4 and Victoria II - being the most recent PDS games I bought at launch. EU4 is actually the only game in recent memory which I reordered, and I never regretted it.

Can't speak for Magicka since I don't own it, but that's not actually developed by them anyway, only published.

Either way, I'm going to wait for launch and see how the reviews are. It's a new IP so I see it as a risky thing to preorder. If they came along with Victoria III or something though, I'd preorder without a doubt so I could preload it and play the second it's launched :D.

That beauty down there:
i5 6600K
EVGA GeForce 960 4GB
16 GB RAM
250 GB SSD, 3TB HDD
24" screen
Microsoft ergonomic keyboard, I quite like their hardware, they should just focus on that.
Cheapest corded no-brand mouse I could find.
32" TV is an optional second display.

I'm currently playing Morrowind over OpenMW 0.38 and goes really well.

Sometimes you could see some graphic glitch, but overall, the game is fully playable to the end.

The fact is, this program runs better than the original on modern machines.
You can play on a 64 bit rig with more than 4 GB RAM without issues nor unexpected halts to desktop.

It also supports a lot of community mods.

I'm using Morrowind Overhaul 3.0, with which the game looks gorgeus.

QuoteI think I will have to purchase a copy of Morrowind myself to try out now, as OpenMW seems like it's very playable. I originally played Morrowind on the original Xbox and loved it, so hopefully it holds up.
I really recomend it.

Quoting: Beamboom
Quoting: maodzedunWhere does the bottleneck come from, though? There is about 20% performance difference between 1080p and 4K which makes zero sense.

It makes all the sense in the world? 4k is only EIGHT TIMES as many pixels to calculate and draw for each frame.

Firstly, a correction to your numbers. HD is 1920x1080. 4k is NOT 8xHD pixels - 4K resolutions are typically 3840x2160, despite the implication that 4K has 4000 vertical lines. 4k has 4xHD pixels.

Back in the early days of GPU cards, once you hit the pixel fill rate, that was basically the bottleneck. So 4x the pixels would be 1/4th the frame rate.

Modern cards are highly parallel, typically 100+ pipelines even at the midrange. Pixel rate is no longer the bottleneck, shader texel rates and data across the GPU bus are more critical. If the texture data needed by the GPU fits into the VRAM, along with the compiled pixel and vertex shaders, very high frame rates at high resolutions will run nearly as fast as the lower resolutions.

you can download the libglew 1.10 deb manually and install it. it doesn't remove 1.13 and has no conflicts that I can tell.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glew/1.10.0-3

there is a .deb download link someone left on the reddit post. which I used instead of using the unsecure repo.
http://content.runescape.com/downloads/ubuntu/pool/non-free/r/runescape-launcher/runescape-launcher_2.2.2_amd64.deb

this client is available in the AUR for Arch users.

I tried to log in, but when i try to type in the login or the password field I get no response from any sort of input from my keyboard.

Thats good :) But HOI3, EU3 and Magicka etc. They have improved sure(they nearly went bankrupt because almost everyone waited for the first addon to buy the game knowing that it would be vastly improved then). Hopefully they will continue to release better games day one. But IMHO there is never a reason to preorder a digital product.

The system is actually brand new, I built it just a week ago. Had to order a new case to fit my new GTX 980 Ti and then the painstaking task of moving everything over. But I'm glad I did it because everything's snappy again.

Specs:
Intel Core i5-4690K
MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti
24 GB of DDR3 RAM
1 TB Hitachi Disk
