Here's another way to look at the Linux market share on Steam
3 December 2017 at 1:39 am UTC Likes: 5

sarmadThat's still not good, considering that China is the future biggest market. This chart means Linux is completely ignoring the Chinese market. Also, the non-Chinese market share is still going down.

from what I've read in the past, it's more to do with how Chinese have not taken to Linux that well. many even down play Linux more-so with misinformation. In the last 5 to 6 years that view has been changing thanks to Android and a few developers that have been working on Chinese language for Ubuntu Kylin and the mostly Chinese developed distro Deepin.

in order for Linux to be available for Simplified Chinese someone has to be willing to do the translations. plus China has been so ingrained to use windows that pirated copies of windows 7 runs rampant from what I've read in the past. I honestly don't know how much of that has been true. but considering that many don't have windows 10 yet, since it is a free upgrade, then they most likely don't have the MS genuine approval for the free upgrade.

one thing that could flip windows on it's ear though, is if we could get more Linux adoption to China along with key games that are real popular in China ported properly for best performance. it's an interesting idea.

Linux market share on Steam drops again as Steam continues to grow
3 December 2017 at 1:23 am UTC

64.35% of all steam users are Chinese speaking. English is only 17.02% that is an interesting statistic in of itself. with Chinese at a growth of 8.23% and english at a decline of -4.25%. with the increase of windows 7 almost in the same proportions and the drop of windows 10 similar to english speakers. if you make a game on steam it should have Chinese translations be designed for dx11 as a prereq if you want the largest market. interesting times indeed...

Spoxel, the sandbox RPG is coming to Steam with Linux support

i'm such a glutton for sandbox games, especially if they use voxels and allow me to build stuff. if it has survival, then that is a bonus.

Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition is coming from Beamdog, Linux support confirmed

this is awesome, would love an updated version of this. I'm going to grab the digital deluxe for sure. I still have my original with all expansions tarballed. I played it back on ubuntu 12.04 & 14.04 after steam came to Linux, so i had that plus Civ 4 to play while i waited on other things to come out. had to do a little work around for the sound to work, but it ran great.

Stardock is planning to release 'Star Control: Origins' on Linux
20 November 2017 at 10:47 pm UTC

neowiz73it's interesting to see Stardock warm up to linux. I hope this continues, even in other areas aside from games. their UX designs are nice and I've always thought they would be better suited for Linux than on Windows.

Yeah, some of their software seems to actually add thing s to Windows that Linux Desktop Environments have had for years.

this is true, but it never hurts to have fresh ideas and development going on within Linux as far as DE/UX goes. they could design their own tablet and/or console system and push their own interface that could work for steam and other types of gaming like using a translation layer for android for linux (much like anbox but that idea can be refined a lot still), overall it could help GNU/Linux as a whole, if it were ever made open source. pave their own way so to speak, by making a true user friendly Linux system for home users.

but not to many companies are willing to take radical leaps anymore. to much pressure from MS to keep things in their court. although if no one else does, then Google will simply run away with it all eventually.

Planet Nomads is about to get a lot more interesting
17 November 2017 at 5:47 am UTC

looking forward to the November 23rd update, i've enjoyed checking this game out the last couple of weeks. the one downside to me is the lack of variety when it comes to creatures. it would be nice to have some more formidable "boss" like creatures as well. hopefully this is in a future update. I hope the physics get an update/fix, i've died more from strange things like my entire house catapulting a few hundred meters into the air than from the creatures.

overall I really enjoy sandbox games, the graphics in this game are really nice. I just don't see it being a 100+ hour game unless there is a lot of added content. I hope the monuments live up to the hype.

The work from the Solus developers to get their Linux Steam Integration as a Snap is coming along
10 November 2017 at 9:48 pm UTC

great stuff , thanks Ikey and all those who have worked on this. the ARK fixes are probably one of the biggest aspects of it. i'm not sure if the shader issues for nvidia were part of the fix or not. I don't have it installed anymore to test. but I most likely will in the near future.
