The Children's Commissioner in England has called on the government to class loot boxes as gambling

Quoting: fagnerlnHERE WE GO AGAIN...

We don't need the government controlling even more our lives, the parents should moderate what their children are using.

It's clearly not been working up until now, and from my perspective as an adult without any children of my own, these things are still ruining games, as we have seen countless times in so called "AAA" games that have been more or less designed from the ground and up around loot boxes, predatory monetization and gambling practices, which by the way can be hazardous to some adults as well, not just children. Those games are not better for it. As games they are objectively worse regardless whether one jumps into the micro-transaction part of the game or stays out of it. The game industry has had years to fix this issue and they have failed spectacularly. Only recent media coverage and government interest has had a bit of positive effect, but it's still not enough. New legislation is needed, and the game industry brought it on themselves.

Edit: Fixed a stupid typo

Nice. I agree with others here though in that DE:MD is the one that really needs this sort of enhancement.

Prison Architect updated with more free content, needs a fix for it running on Linux

Launched fine without the workaround for me on an up to date Debian Sid machine.

Edit: Nevermind. This time it didn't work, despite running fine earlier today.

Just some of the games coming to Linux in 2019, the September edition

Still waiting for SotTR, and that's pretty much all I care about.
Borderlands 2 with the latest DLC would be nice too.

Quoting: BrisseI'm playing the 2013 HD Remaster through Proton without any problems. Before Proton, when I used Wine, I had to bypass the launcher to get it to work, but in recent versions of Proton even the launcher works.
Oh, the launcher works now? I had to bypass it when I first tried getting the game to run back when Proton first came out. Am I missing out on anything by continuing to bypass it?

Not really. Not once have I used the launcher for anything else than clicking "Play" :)

Quoting: PhiladelphusI'm really confused seeing Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on there

It's the predecessor, not the sequel. The first one already has a Definitive Edition. The second one has an 'HD Remaster', but is getting a Definitive Edition as well in the future. Yes, it's a bit confusing :)
Quoting: Liam DaweThis, the key is the "(2013)" in the name.
Whoops! Reading comprehension failure there. :D Yeah, I have the AoE II HD Remaster, and am looking forward to the Definitive Edition for it—at least now I can go back to hoping that that will work with Proton! :)

I bought ED a long time ago, at a time when I was still a flight sim enthusiast (DCS, F4 BMS, MS:FS etc.) and had a full flight sim setup with HOTAS, pedals and TrackIR. My interest in flight sims started dwindling and eventually I sold all my hardware and shortly after I ditched Windows too. I never got to play much of ED before that, but now that it works in Proton I might give it another go. How well does it work with an Xbone-controller or mouse and keyboard? Is it still worth getting into even without all that HOTAS gear?

A look at how Steam Play is doing, based on the ProtonDB reports from July

Quoting: PhiladelphusYeah. I see Age of Empires II regularly gets a bunch of platinum ratings, despite the fact that I needed to delete a launcher file and rename the game executable to get it to run, making it a solid gold. (It's possible this has changed since I got it working several months ago, but even back then people were rating it platinum.)

Are you sure that's necessary? I remember having to do that in Wine a few years back, but in Proton, at least the latest version, it just worked, including the launcher.

A simple guide to Steam Play, Valve's technology for playing Windows games on Linux

Quoting: scaineGreat guide though. Thanks for this - the gifs tell the story better than words ever can. It's nice to have a guide on a Linux technology that doesn't need you to open a bash shell!

I always use shell commands when I want to help somebody, as it's the most reproducible way and the easiest to tell. It's great to have it visible though for cases where you know how it will look like - as in the Steam client.

While I agree that the shell is a phenomenal way to get things done, we still have to keep in mind that even the more savvy Windows user initially find it very off-putting. It's also not good practice to copy/paste random commands into a terminal before knowing what the commands actually do.
