Valve's Linux Development Blog Goes Live

Hi all

Valve have just launched their Linux blog!

Here are a few tidbits:

I hope that it will be distributed in .tar archive just like Desura. That way I can install it wherever I want and then move into another partition if needed. I don't like games packaged in .deb installing to system directories. Games should be put in their own places.

Hard to know what their plans will be for packaging. Windows and MacOS have a single binary that downloads the rest of Steam and then includes games in its own self-contained location (pretty much how Desura works). That's definitely an option, but who knows how they're planning to handle dependencies. I did shoot them an email suggesting that might be a good topic (amongst others) for a future blog post.

i hope no deb, cuz i like to have my stuff installed portable, not in the /usr folders.
if there is deb tho. u can pretty much extract it and probably use with any distro, with some small symlinking probably.

the guys from the Xenonauts kickstarter had a questionnaire about which packaging and such people preferred, pointed them to the same article and told them to contact you. Just curious if they ever did?

Not surprised - Croteam did basically say the only reason they did not want to release a Linux version was because of the lack of Steam. Someone should check up on the Red Orchestra guys and see if they were serious about that as well.

I'm pretty sure that comments are moderated. I didn't see mine show up until the day after I posted it.

I sort of gather that woth the people they've got onboard that they probably have their heads wrapped around the issues. Wouldn't hurt to send them an email though :)
