Shadowrun Returns Linux Port Just Started

By - | Views: 16,022
Shadowrun Returns - MAN MEETS MAGIC & MACHINE. The year is 2054. Magic has returned to the world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Technology merges with flesh and consciousness. It's on it's way to Linux folks!

They have been quiet on the Linux front up until now but on the 2nd of August they confirmed the Linux port has been started!
QuoteWe have started working on the Linux version of Shadowrun Returns this week. We have our build machine up and running and have started making test builds. It’s still unclear just how much more work is necessary, because the builds are pretty rough in spots. For example, we can create characters, but there are errors when loading into the first apartment scene. The editor is now compiling in Linux, but unfortunately crashes when trying to load scenes. We’re confident we can work through the various Linux-related issues, but it is going to take some time to wrangle them into submission.

Key Features
  • Gripping Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With the variety of weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices. A successful run requires commanding a team of runners with the right balance of combat, tech, and magical abilities.
  • Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Street Samurai and Physical Adepts use advanced combat skills to dominate the battlefield, Shamans and Mages summon powerful allies and cast deadly spells, while Riggers and Deckers provide critical technological support, projecting their consciousness directly into drones and computer systems. Shadowrun Returns’ classless skill system allows you to grow your character in any direction you choose. Want to start summoning spirits as an ork Shaman and evolve into a cybered-up weapon specialist? Do it!
  • Engaging 2D/3D Art Style: Shadowrun Returns mixes dynamic 3D characters and lighting with a vibrant, hand-painted environment. Illustrated character portraits bring every conversation to life. Explore a world filled with detail, from the slums of the Redmond Barrens to the extravagant offices of powerful corporations.

The game is one of the Kickstarters that hit it big to come out, so I imagine quite a few people are eagerly awaiting it. I am not a Kickstarter backer myself but will be picking it up when it comes out.

The only thing that bugs me about it is that it doesn't have a "proper" save system, it uses checkpoints, checkpoints in big games like this usually do nothing but annoy me. You won't always have time to go off and find a checkpoint to save so you could lose progress if you don't play it at a time when you know for as fact you have a lot of free time.
These save systems always remind me of a time when space was an issue, so developers had to place limits like checkpoints on. So we will soon see if it is a game-changer or not.

TBH I already downloaded it to windows because it took so much time to (start) getting ported

@Ba7a7chy: Been there done that. I value my freedom more than getting a game quickly on NSA/Windows. I can wait =)

Edit: When I quote somebody, their text shows but mine doesn't. I had to unquote him in order to show my text.

Hmm quoting got broken somehow will find a fix.

Is the game anygood?

This game has mixed reviews, but should be worthwhile as the developers are gradually adding features to address some of the players concerns. I will certainly buy it as soon as it is ported.

@Ba7a7chy: I have so many games to play that I can afford to wait until games are patched and fully playable. I waited until now to play Skyrim, so that shows how much one can wait. I am not sure yet whether to try it on wine or on my windows partition. I do try to avoid going on my windows hard drive as much as I can. Irony is yesterday I got the Steam survey on one of the rare occasions I was lurking on my windows partition.

They twitted on july 25: "Linux port will come in the next few months. Working on it now!"
Next week they tell us they just started to work on it that week...

Anyway, the game runs fine with Wine (except mouse scroll for me).

Same here, I can also wait since I have to many games to play on Linux ^^

At the moment I have Guild Wars 2 (wine) and Minecraft on GoL Server to play. Also my Linux Steam library has 110 games already ^^

I need more free time >.<

Testing quoting.

Also, Totalbiscuit liked SR:R.  He, of course, pointed out flaws, chiefly the checkpointing system (which the devs supposedly implemented due to cost and expediency), but over-all was very impressed.

I can make quoting work, but it is a pain.  I also got an SQL error but misclicked rather than copying the text :-(

Please report all info to the forum on the quoting stuff, can't get it to work myself at all when quoting directly.

I've played it a bit and immensely enjoyed it. Main complaints are:
- short campaign which does not bother me as I barely have enough time to complete a short one and the price was not that high
- the checkpoint system mentioned here which is a debatable design decision that I happen to like as a compulsive load/save abuser when that is available
- very run of the mill story which is not a problem to me as I've been exposed to so little shadowrun/cyberpunk that it feels fresh

So I think this is a must-have. Didn't originally back it on kickstarter but the gameplay video they released a while back got me so excited that I just had to buy it at that point.
