Red Orchestra 2 And Tripwire's Future Titles To Come To Linux

So it seems Tripwire the creators of Killing Floor and Red Orchestra will be porting the rest of their games to Linux as well as having their new unannounced title support us from the get-go.

Speaking to PCGamer they said:

That has put us in a really good position to take advantage of SteamOS when it is released since it is essentially Linux + Big Picture + Awesome Performance Optimizations + Other Cool Stuff. We’ll be working on setting up the rest of our recent titles with SteamOS support in the not too distant future. We also plan on releasing our next unannounced title with SteamOS support right out of the box.


So FPS fans it seems like you will have plenty to choose from soon enough, this will also be another Unreal Engine 3 game that will support Linux.

I hope other developers take a note of this as well:

The game does look fantastic, I have a few friends who play it so it will be nice to be able to play with them natively!

about DRM, in my opinion...YES i would def take DRM free software / games over non DRM anyday, but if its not an option, and i am able to play a game natively on my fav OS..im all about that as well.

Their port wasn't theirs, technically. I believe it was ported after the fact by Icculus? Not sure that you should be worried about more support for linux rather than none at all. I'll take AAA games with a few texture errors over no AAA games, myself.

Im with you on this one. I love playing killing floor but the nvidia texture bug is really bad, some levels are almost unplayable because of it. Id really like them to fix this. Id rather they fix this bug than make new games.

Are you sure, have you seen how its supposed to look? I have 3 different nvidia computers with different cards and they all suffer from the corruptions only in Linux. Essentially the flashlight is useless, it creates a square of broken textures that obstructs the view making dark levels impossible to play. Also the map where you start out outside with the broken cars, there are no textures everything is grey, there are no floors in most inside maps, just grey. Invisible monsters look like they are made of mercury like the silver surfer. Sometimes the knife is invisible. Glass doesnt always work. The sight on the crossbow is black and doesnt work at all, making the weapon useless. There are many threads about the problem and icculus said he was working on it since last November but the problem remains. The game is barely playable because of it, really wish they would fix it. I could show you more but I think that’s enough.

I've played on Windows and Linux (not extensively). I will reinstall tonight if I have time, and will post my findings.

I've played about 230 hours of KF now, about 40 of those on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit with a GTX670. I was getting all those bugs initially. I played a bit over the weekend and nearly all of them are resolved... kind of. I say kind of because for 6 waves, everything was perfect. Then something glitched during wave 7... like a v-sync hiccup, and suddenly some of the textures were missing again.


The only level it bothers me though is West London, where most of the ground textures are missing. Office is missing ground texture too, but only in the car park, so you rarely see it (the car park is a death trap best avoided, at least on Hard/Nightmare modes). A few pipes lose their texture. And are you still getting the crossbow texture error? That was fixed months ago, I thought.

With the exception of the crossbow scope, it's hardly making the game unplayable though. A distraction at worst.

And I'll say it again, it seems odd to pour derision on a developer's attempts to release for your platform because an ancient, badly ported game doesn't work too well on your system. I find that attitude incredibly frustrating. Now imagine if I was the said developer. Frustrating AND demotivating.
