Chaos Reborn From the Creator Of The Original X-COM With Linux Support

By - | Views: 9,282

Chaos Reborn is the newest major Kickstarter to pop up, from one developer I highly respect for creating the original X-COM strategy game.

This project is one of those that in my eyes is pretty much guaranteed to be funded, and if it isn't then I will lose faith in you all! Looking at the tending for it, it is trending to hit well-over its goal and that makes me happy, but trending this early on for funders is by no means a good measure we will need to wait until the initial outburst of pledges die down to see the real trend.

The game is based on Julian Gollop's Chaos that was on the ZX Spectrum, so it can be considered a sequel/re-imaging of the original.

The Strategy/RPG game has full Linux blessing as confirmed in the video, in the rewards and from Julian himself to me:

@gamingonlinux Yes, Chaos Reborn will launch on Linux, as well as Mac OS X and Windows

The game looks like it will offer a lot to satisfy strategy fans and RPG game fans with single-player and online game-modes.

This just entered my top 10 of games to look forward to in 2015.

Features

  • Quick playing, turn-based combat. Battles typically last 10-30 minutes.
  • 80 unique spells, including 24 creatures - from dragons to goblins - fully animated in the 3D Unity Engine.
  • Classic spells from the original Chaos - including the Gooey Blob, Raise Dead, and Magic Wood.
  • Bluff and deception - summon creatures as illusions for 100% success, and use Disbelieve spell on suspected enemy illusions.
  • Manipulate the balance of the Cosmos between Law and Chaos to your advantage.
  • Procedurally generated 3D battle arenas with various types of terrain, and different levels of elevation.
  • Multiple game modes, including Classic Chaos mode - fully random battle set-up with random selection of spells.

It also has a host of multiplayer features thrown in:

  • Multiplayer online matches - asynchronous or live
  • Offline multiplayer battles on one machine (hotseat mode)
  • Online rankings and league system
  • Tournaments with prizes
  • Extensive co-op options, for multiplayer matches - 2 vs 2, or human co-op vs AI players
  • Guild system with guild rankings and guild tournaments
  • Trade items and equipment with your friends or guild members

The most exciting thing about Chaos Reborn is easily the Realms of Chaos mode, which offers a big single-player RPG experience, this includes procedural generation, user crafted realms, co-op modes, and a ton more.

QuoteThe fact that Julian says "Windows" and not "PC" like a lot of other developers also gets him brownie points.

He says PC in the video though. :)

Just pledged to this - I got a heads up back in February that this was happening (was meant to go live on March 14th, but heyho). Very exciting.

I've added this one to the Games wiki and we'll no doubt cover it in the next Funding Crowd as a Biggie!

Chaos was a superb game. Even though I've never owned ZX Spectrum, I played it for long hours on the emulator on my Amiga. ;-)

You were on the Amiga and haven't played 'Total Chaos AGA' back then?

Definitely one of my all-time favorites. Hope this reincarnation at least gets close..

Nope, never heard of it. :-(

Anything with the name Gollop catches my attention. Laser Squad, X-Com, Magic & Mayhem (this is a gem that gets less mentions than it deserves). Looking forward to this.
