FLASHOUT 2 Racing Game Game-play Video & Some Thoughts

FLASHOUT 2 is a game that reminds me very much of playing Wipeout on the early games consoles and it's actually pretty good on Linux.

It's a pretty standard futuristic racing game with a few weapons here and there to blow your enemies out of the game for a moment and it all feels very fluid, so as far as I can tell for me it works really, really well without any crashes.

The game really does feel fast to the point of reminding me why I didn't particularly like the Wipeout games, as they just feel too fast I end up bouncing off the walls and never catching up to the other racers. The game also doesn't happen to tell you what keys to press to do anything in the tutorial which for me is an annoying oversight in games. I don't like to have to come out of games to look up the correct keys to press, it's a tutorial it's supposed to tell me. You can sort-of tell it is aimed at mobiles with buttons over the screen you can press with the mouse, but I feel like they distract on the desktop game.

There is no accelerating either, so that's another nail in the "mobile game turned desktop game" experience. Not sure if that will be a kicker for many of you, but for me a racing game that races for you is a bit odd.

The upgrade system is nice to have, but it seems you can't race on the higher difficulties until you get much better ships as the AI is too fast. So, that ruins it a bit for me since you have to keep racing really easy races to get to the challenges.

The graphics in the game are great though and it's really nice even when you're zooming around that things still look good, but once you play a couple of tracks it does all begin to look the same.

So, overall I think it's an okay game that could have been solid, but for the minor reasons I pointed out it's not a favourite. So, it's good for small sessions and if you like this type of racer it will probably be ideal for you, as we don't exactly have many.

Check it out on Steam.

I wish there was a filter on Stem where all mobile games could be filtered out.

I wish the devs would have put some extra time in it to make a "SteamOS version" whitch would eliminate these small, obvious flaws for a PC game. For this port, I'd pay 2-3 €.

I might pay 5$ for this on sale, but these tracks seem really narrow.

Running any NFS or Burnout Paradise on Wine has tragically failed leaving me carless in terms of "gaming on linux". There's a real market for good Linux Racers imo. Hopefully the Arcade 90s Racer will be done soon :(

I agree that there aren´t any good racing games on Linux at the moment. I think there is a market how ever, or will be. But hold on until Project Cars will come, it sure looks nice.

I was really exited about this game, but if it's another android game ported to desktop with no changes I will probably forget about it. For me, a game made for mobile is not a good desktop game. As you said, I like accelerating in a race game and buttons on the screen have no reason at all when you are using a keyboard.

It's a real pity, it looks cool!

I bought this game and found it to be the worst game I have bought for a long time, regretted my decision after only 15 minutes. I would give my reasons, but just thinking about playing this game makes me far too angry.

Super Tux Kart is getting a graphical overhaul and being put on Steam (I assume as early access). Other than that, there isn't much out there (That Road Rash clone and Project Cars). Racing games have been traditionally a console-dominated space. I hope Steam Machines will change this though.

You poor thing. I've had no end of issues with Burnout Paradise on Wine until I registered my copy with Origin, and installed the Origin version. Now it runs. (but I can't go online with it, but then I couldn't in windows before anyway.)

Good game, glad I bought it. My wife does not appreciate it though :D.
