Out There, A Popular Space Strategy Game Coming To Linux!

By - | Views: 8,108

It didn't take long for the developer of Out There to confirm it would come to Linux after announcing the Windows & Mac versions, but after a few requests it's now confirmed, woo! The game is a bit like FTL on steroids with a very different art style and more exploration based, and it looks fantastic.

That is the mobile version, so there will be changes for desktop of course, but it gives you a good idea of what it's all about.

About
You are an astronaut awaking from cryonics not in the solar system, but... out there... in a far and unknown place of the galaxy. In Out There, you will have to survive, tinkering your ship with what you can gather drifting in the void, and spot garden planets to refill your oxygen supply.

Space is an hostile place ; dangerous and mysterious adventures will mark each step of your travel. You will not only meet intelligent species that won’t care about you, but also deal with ancient powers linked to your destiny and the fate of mankind itself.

Survival and understanding of what is really at stake in the galaxy is the core of what Out There has to offer.

The indie mobile hit blending resource management and gamebook, set in a dark sci-fi universe, dives in a new galaxy and goes PC and Mac!

This is not a straight port from the mobile version though!

As ruthless as the original on mobiles, Out There : Ω Edition will offer updated graphics and additional contents.
Players will encounter new alien races, new ships, and a brand new ending.
More than 50 new text adventures will darken your space odyssey.
Out There : ΩE will provide uncharted planets and environments delivered by a new graphic engine.
Last but not least, Siddhartha Barnhoorn will extend the existing soundtrack with new compositions.

It only took an hour after announcing the desktop version, but the developer has now confirmed it will be on Linux!

@gamingonlinux Yeah I've talked to my developer and he said "OK let's do it"

Wonderful! Seems like a nice game. Will probably buy.

I think porting mobile games to PC as a bit useless, as usually these games are fairly limited, but still, why not offer the option to the buyers. Out There is a great game on the phone...one of my best experiences this year.

Quoting: GuestI bought it for my smartphone and it’s nice, but a bit too hard for me…

I think it needs either a difficulty setting or better explanations or less randomness… not sure.

OK first off, when you hop from planet to planet, manage your resources well.
You do NOT need to mine every planet, what you want to do is move forward. To do that, you should try to get as much fuel as possible
Mine in the following order:
Gas planets (Nearly on every system that you hop into) - you will never have too much gas
Metals - only if you have below 20 iron. Other materials you can leave on the planets...
Planets with Life - If you have enough fuel, try to visit them as you will unlock techs. Oxygen is fairly easy to come by.

NEVER mine Suns unless you are desperate, or you have a super hull

Mine at a depth of 7, bear in mind that if you get over 4 in fuel resources it is worth having drilled. Below that, you are mining at a loss!

Oh, this looks beautiful! I'll definitely keep an eye on it. Looks a little bit like FTL but with more variety and depth.

The music is nice too. Maybe they'll offer a bundle including the game and the soundtrack. That would be great.

I should try this some time later)

FTL on steroids, that seems great ! As much as I loved FTL I missed some quind of open exploration. I'll definitely buy this one when it comes to Linux.

No, FTL definitely has more depth in strategy, Out There is more like a survival Gamebook. They are two very different games. Try both, you will like them.

Hey, thanks for the guide! It will definitely help me. But I’m not sure what you mean with the quote above… I can not know what I will get before drilling, can I?

BTW I bought the game on the Humble Store.

Sorry, my explanations were very vague. Basically, what I mean is always mine first at 7, if you mine at a lesser depth you will mineless resources, if you mine deeper than 7, you run a high risk of breaking your equipment. (Which can be easily repaired in all fairness). If with this first drilling you have found more than 15 resources, then repeat the operation. Never mine three times.

I wish you luck. My first 4-5 goes at Out There were frustrating as I did not get past the 4-5 first planets/systems. Once you have the knack for surviving, you will be able to enjoy the story as it unfolds.

EDIT - May I also point out that Out There is getting a free expansion pack called the Omega Edition.
