By - | Views: 7,440
Developer of the shooter series Serious Sam, Croteam, announced today that their upcoming philosophical first-person puzzle game The Talos Principle will release on 11th December. It will be available for purchase starting today and pre-ordering will give you a gift-able copy of Serious Sam 3: BFE.

According to the official announcement the game will get a same-day release for Linux:

QuoteThe news that you've all been waiting for – The Talos Principle will be released on December 11th via Steam on PC, Mac and Linux. PlayStation 4 version will follow in early 2015, as well as Android version. The game will be available for preorder later today, with 10% off the purchase price, and if you preorder you’ll also get giftable copy of Serious Sam 3: BFE!

Serious Sam 3: BFE is already available for Linux so this sounds like a good deal if you've been thinking of picking that one up. Unfortunately there are no DRM free options for either game.

Last month we wrote about their free puzzle game Elohim. If you haven't played that one yet, now might be the time, as completing puzzle sets in that game will unlock helpful items to use in The Talos Principle.

Official About

The Talos Principle is a philosophical first-person puzzle game from Croteam, the creators of the legendary Serious Sam games, written by Tom Jubert (FTL, The Swapper) and Jonas Kyratzes (The Sea Will Claim Everything).

As if awakening from a deep sleep, you find yourself in a strange, contradictory world of ancient ruins and advanced technology. Tasked by your creator with solving a series of increasingly complex puzzles, you must decide whether to have faith, or to ask the difficult questions: Who are you? What is your purpose And what are you going to do about it?

Features:
  • Overcome more than 120 immersive puzzles in a stunning world.
  • Divert drones, disable turrets, and even replicate time to prove your worth – or to find a way out.
  • Explore a story about humanity, technology, and civilization. Uncover clues, devise theories, and make up your own mind.
  • Choose your own path through the game’s non-linear world, solving puzzles your way.
  • But remember: choices have consequences, and somebody’s always watching you.

Philosophy in games is a great idea! There were already a few things in there about being free out of choice or being forced to be free - that's the kind of stuff games should have (as long as they're not presented in a ridiculous JRPG manner where it turns out that all existence is the creation of some guy with dark sunglasses and spiky hair).

Going to keep my eye on this one. Really enjoyed The Swapper so hopefully this will be just as good or better and along similar lines :)

100% agreed. Really curious about which direction they go with the story and how it will tie in with the gameplay. Definitely picking this one up before release.

Thanks. Don't know how I missed that but it's fixed now.

Depending on cost I plan to go ahead and pre order this one. I am absolutely intrigued and SS3 runs well so I assume this will too.

They've determined the price now: $35.99 / 17.99€ / £26.99. It's more than I would usually pay for a game (since I mostly buy indies) but I figure it's so rare that a higher budget game actually appeals to me that it's worth it. Waiting for closer to release though, in case there are news of delays or something.

Indeed. I was looking at the prices with the Steam Enhanced browser plugin before. When checking Steam directly with the "cc" query parameter however, I get $33.99 / 33.99€ / £25.49. It also looks like the pre-order discount changed from 10% to 15%, though the widget still says 10%.
