BioShock Infinite Looks Set For A Linux Release (CONFIRMED)

By - | Views: 53,927
Update #1 I spoke over email with my personal contact at Aspyr Media, and they confirmed they are not doing the port:
QuoteWhile Aspyr is working on a multitude of Linux titles right now, BioShock Infinite is not one of them. That said, this is exciting news and we are looking forward to a great title coming to a great platform.

We have now reached out to our contacts at 2K.

Update #2 2K have now confirmed it on their Twitter and it will be released "early 2015".

Good news, Linux gamers: BioShock Infinite is coming to Linux in early 2015. More details coming after the New Year. pic.twitter.com/kj4QXq1IYx

Thanks to everyone who sent the confirmation in!

I love waking up to this sort of news. This isn't confirmed yet, but thanks to SteamDB we have word that BioShock Infinite looks highly likely that it will see a Linux release.

Pretty exciting, as it's yet another game I've never even touched for not having a Linux version. The Steam reviews are "Overwhelingly Positive", so that's a damn good sign to me.

On SteamDB the "depot" page now has a "Linux Binaries" section, and on the history it states this:
QuoteChanged Depots
214940/config/oslist: linux
214940/name: Linux Binaries

Considering the original publisher is 2K who don't mind Linux ports, and the Mac port was done by Aspyr Media it certaintly seems likely we will see a Linux port soon!

About the game
Indebted to the wrong people, with his life on the line, veteran of the U.S. Cavalry and now hired gun, Booker DeWitt has only one opportunity to wipe his slate clean. He must rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood and locked up in the flying city of Columbia. Forced to trust one another, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond during their daring escape. Together, they learn to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities, as they fight on zeppelins in the clouds, along high-speed Sky-Lines, and down in the streets of Columbia, all while surviving the threats of the air-city and uncovering its dark secret. The Feral radar has now Linux and Mac icons in the small puzzle pictures... Is it just me that missed that?

"Everybody wants to rule the world" has a little Tux icon in the bottom corner.

The linux/mac icons on the feral radar weren't there yesterday ...

They had said they would be adding linux games to the radar. In fact they did it once previously but then removed them because it wasn't clear which games were for which platform.

"Everybody wants to rule the world" is a brand new addition. I immediately think of XCom, but they've already released that so it must be something else? The picture, when blown up appears to show ranks of soldiers armed with rifles or pikes, so based on the games Feral have previously ported I'd say it has to be one of the Total War series - Napoleon maybe? The artwork style seems to be a good match - https://www.feralinteractive.com/en/mac-games/napoleontw/media/

Of course Feral gave us a clue about this game a short time back. It was a picture of a King Penguin, but some people, probably including Feral thought it was an EMPEROR penguin. Napolean declared himself Emperor of Europe, and walked like a penguin (short legs, arm clasped to his side). Mystery solved?

If it's not for Bioshock Infinite, based on the SteamDB, it's probably Empire: Total War. A radar entry for both?

Well that certainly casts doubt on my theory. Well I hit google and found this:
http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/Soldier%27s_Field

As I noted before, the image appears to show soldiers in front of a field type landscape. So perhaps a reference to Bioshock Infinite after all.

WOW.

If you don't yet own it, get it and play it when it has got the penguin.

It is GREAT.

A question. If you wait until the game is released for Linux, but you want a boxed copy. What happens if you buy a boxed version, activates it under Linux and play it under Linux? It counts as a Linux sale and the money goes to the guys who ported the game?

Thanks.

It will note it's a boxed copy (steam has depots and info for boxed copies), and pay the appropriate people. If you want the Linux sale, buy it on Linux and play it on Linux/
