H-Craft Championship is a futuristic racer that's free and open source, and the developers kindly let us know about a new version.

The developers mentioned this about the new version:
QuoteIt's a free Sci-Fi racing game which runs on GNU/Linux. Version 1.3 comes with new controls and also fixed a few crashes caused by sound which we had on Linux 64 bit systems. No restrictions or demo versions - the game is just free :-)

You can find the source code here. They state most of it is under the zlib-license.

If you try it out, come back and let us know how it runs for you. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I bought this game years ago, back when there weren't many commercial Linux games. I was never very good at it. Some of the tracks have no rails, so you can just fly right off and fall if you don't turn the corners just right. Anyway, it's nice to know that they've released the source code now that they no longer sell it.

I didn't try the new version yet, but it is supposed to be easier.
QuoteWe got much feedback about the controls over the years, so we decided to work on those.
- H-Craft still has this dream-like quality of flying over the tracks on a cushion of air.
- There are now energy walls around the tracks preventing falling off in many situations.
- Experts can still take short-cuts at corners.
- Steering has been fine-tuned to allow more control over the H-Crafts.

I tried it when the previous version first came out. I never could get a hang of the controls so it ended up in the recycle bin. :-/

I was hoping to try it today, but the game did not launch.
When trying to launch from console I get this :
./hcraft_bin: 4: ./hcraft_bin: Syntax error: " ) " unexpected

Anyone has an idea ? Or did anyone get this error too ? I have tried to contact them, so I'll let you know if they give me an answer.

Ok, I got it, thanks to a message from one of the devs.
It's a 64-bit release only, and I'm still on my 32-bit Kubuntu. Will try it on my laptop.
