Colony Builder 'Maia' Updated, Bring Fire Extinguishers

Maia is certainly an interesting take on the colony building genre, but it has been lacking in things to do. This new major release aims to help with that, and it brings fire.

QuoteThe brand new fire system really adds a challenge to base gameplay. Poorly maintained items will short circuit and catch alight. The fire is simulated realistically using oxygen from the atmosphere, the energy stored in objects and heat transfer between them. Even in an unpressurised room, objects can retain now heat and reignite when oxygen is reintroduced. Lock doors and bulkheads to choke off the air supply or risk letting your colonists try and fight the flames unaided.

It also adds a new and better tutorial, hydroponic plants are now better simulated too. The amount of air they produce will be lower if they are in a dark room for example.

Not to be outclassed by general gameplay features, the graphics can be adjusted now too. If you have a decent enough card you can turn on MSAAx4 or MSAAx8. It looks good, but even at the 4 setting it cut performance in half on my 970!

My favourite new accessibility feature though is the ability to turn off text effects. I get that fancy text looks cool and all, but I like to be able to properly read what is presented to me, and not have to squint at it to try and read it.

The AI getting fixed up is also a major bonus, my previous games were spent staring at colonists refusing to do anything.

See the full release notes here.

Check out Maia on Steam. It's in Early Access though, so it still has a long way to go. I look forward to more feature filled releases like this one.

It's also on sale, so go get it cheapo! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I considered purchasing this game. However, at $25 I would expect something with more content. At the moment, until about 48 hours after my comment, Maia is on sale for 33% off ($16.74).

I've been without a desktop for so long :'( , that I had forgotten it being in my Steam library. Once I get it running again :|, I think I'll have a couple or four hours of updates, not to mention games in my library that aren't installed at all (Pillars of Eternity is calling me...)
