In case you've been living under a rock recently, Bethesda have announced Fallout 4 with the release date on 10 November. Some observant people out there may have noticed that this is also the release date for Steam Machines.

Now while this is most likely a coincidence (a lot of stuff comes out at that time of year for the holiday season), I'm sure every Fallout fan out there has a small part of them that wishes this is due to it being a Steam Machines "launch title" and these rumours have been appearing on the Steam forums and elsewhere.

This wishful thinking is understandable since not only would this be awesome for those of us who want to play the game on Linux, but also since having a developer like Bethesda on board would be a massive breakthrough for Linux gaming.

I for one will remain cautiously sceptical, but it is a very tantalising prospect and, considering we're getting some huge AAA games which many of us never expected to come to Linux, it also makes sense not to rule anything out.

It could be a secret project from Aspyr Media, Feral Interactive or other well known game porters. We haven't heard anything on it though.

Let's keep our fingers crossed but not get our hopes up too much! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

After many years of floating through space on the back of a missile, following a successful career in beating people up for not playing Sega Saturn, the missile returned to earth. Upon returning, I discovered to my dismay that the once great console had been discontinued and Sega had abandoned the fight to dominate the world through 32-bit graphical capabilities.

After spending some years breaking breeze blocks with my head for money and being mocked by strangers, I have found a new purpose: to beat up people for not playing on Linux.

Maybe this is the "all hands on deck" project. I really hope so, that would be amazing!

I'd love to play this, but I have zero confidence in Bethesda. Well, actually I have zero confidence in Zenimax, which is the real shame because it denies us Bethesda, ID and Arkane.

I'd really like to play Dishonoured again, but ah well.

OH man.. that would be a pretty bad fail on Valve's part to release Steam Machine's on the same day as FO4 and it not work on them. I had not put 2&2 together until seeing this article so my fingers are crossed it is coming to Linux as well.

I personally think that's coincidence - or just Microsoft trolling Valve big time (Fallout 4 was featured *very* visibly during XBO show). They also roll out their own DRM, so it might even be that they will deny Steam access to Fallout 4.

So it might be totally the opposite.

my first gut instinct when i saw the date was... "fuck!... we are being fucked again..." but as a linux user, nothing new and kept going with my life...

It sincerely never crossed my mind that this could be due to the fact that they are launching for steamos as well... it seems rather wishful thinking to me...

But now that you mention it... and I start to accept it as a possibility... it maybe make sense... hear me out...

I dont believe in coincidences. Would bethesda want to sabotage steamOS machines on launch day? Well, they were in bed pretty close when the announcement of paid mods for skyrim. That makes me think that they get along... and that the picking of the date was no coincidence...

Yeah, maybe it is... on the other side... why hide it?

maybe to fuel the hype for steamOS? Yes, to fuel the hype

As a very skeptic linux user whose heart has been broken lots of times before... I believe i am not going to be disappointed here :)

But feel free not to put your heart on the line with this one till the very end ;)

It is an obvious sign that Fallout 4 will be a SteamOS exclusive. :-P

Sure, that's why they got good spot on Xbox One show...wait a minute...is XBO really Steam Machine in disguise? :)

Actually, the more I think about it, it probably isn't coming to Linux. Remember the failure of the paid mods? When Gabe publicly stated on a reddit post (you can Google it), he stated that the drama and uproar around it costed them a butt load a cash (millions). Many were sceptical and assumed he meant customer service, but I believe the possibility of Valve losing Bethesda's confidence may have costed them some relations damage because Bethesda got a lot of shit from their customers as well.

However, I could be wrong. He could have meant anything, really.

At least there is Wasteland 2.
