The developer working on the Linux version of Terraria has made great progress, and it shouldn't be too long before it's considered stable.
In recent builds they have moved the save folder to conform to Linux standards (hooray!), improved performance, fixed lots of crashes and more. Remember you can see the changelog at any time here.
How have you been getting on with it? I tried it on our weekly livestream on Friday with Samsai, and it's quite hilarious. I managed to find a wand that basically squirts water at people, and that created some fun.

If you decide to buy it, you still need to opt-in to the Linux beta on Steam.

I have this game but never played it. How does it stack up against Starbound?

After the Linux beta was released I played a solo run for ~ 10 hours. I purchased the game when the 1.0 version was released but it seems that since then, it has grown a lot!

If I purchase this now, will it still count as a Linux sale since its being done internally? I know you have to opt into the beta, right?

Since they have a Linux branch, I imagine so, otherwise Steam is utterly flawed at tracking and we simply can't win.

I started a new character on my Windows desktop when 1.3 came out early last month, and got farther than I ever have to date (I'm basically procrastinating on starting hardmode at this point).
I installed the Linux beta on my laptop and it's playable but not at max detail. This may be more because my laptop is old, though; I haven't played Terraria on my laptop's Windows partition in a long time, so I don't remember how well it does there.
I do know that I am able to play my Windows-created character on my Linux laptop via Steam Cloud, which is neat.

Very similiar gameplay, with a bit different mechanics. IMHO Terraria has more content and is more fun to play with the events, dungeons, thousands of Items. But both are great games and Starbound is still EA :).
Another one of this kind would be Crea: http://store.steampowered.com/app/280520 [External Link] with some different mechanics e.g. leveling, research, ...

My friends and me are already playing Terraria on 5 Linux PCs since the launch of the Linux Beta.
Saves have been moved to ~/.local/share/Terraria.
I think I played something like 6 sessions this week and it truely is a fantastic game, Terraria is in a class of its own in terms of building, exploring, and collecting all sorts of items.
