Update: It's out!

AMD Catalyst 15.9 is about to be released, and I imagine it will make a few people quite happy with their progress.

AMD did seem to make strides with the 15.7, with a fair few people reporting much better performance in a few different games, and it looks like 15.9 will continue this trend.

QuoteAMD Catalyst 15.9 // fglrx 15.201.1151
[425910] Driver installation sometimes fails on Ubuntu 14.04.3
[424450] Company of Heroes® 2 - Game crashes while running the performance test
[424794] Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor - Corruption observed in game
[424882] DIRT® Showdown - Corruption observed in game
[425234] DIRT® Showdown - Game crashes after the loading screen
[424802] DOTA™ 2 – Application hang observed while exiting the game
[424255] AMD Catalyst™ Installer removing EGL links resulting in Xserver/Xorg load failure
[423471] Unable to switch desktop mode after installing AMD Catalyst™ driver
[423735] Renaming Counter-Strike: GO and other Steam game binary improves performance
Issues
[419960]: Vari-Bright on some configurations is not decreasing brightness as expected
[425912] Alien: Isolation - Blank screen or corruption observed on the main menu in game

Cheers reddit.

A funny bug fix is the renaming of the Counter-Strike: GO executable (to hl2_linux), which resulted in much better performance. This should no longer be needed.

Also, I do wonder why Alien: Isolation is listed in the Linux release notes, looks like they dropped the ball for whoever is porting it.

It will be available to grab here later. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Good to see them caring for the big games on Linux, and good to see they're obviously working together with the Alien porters! Things are going to improve for AMD users as well!

As an AMD Linux user, I'm very happy to hear this news!

Define well? I have one (well two but the second one is useless in Linux) and it runs like crap. And when I say crap I mean 30-40 for a game that should run at about 90fps at least.

Now they just need an intuitive way to install the proprietary driver.

I get 80's + @ 1440p with the 15.5's . Magiea 5 64bit. Not played it for a while mind. I'll try it and check now you've said that

Does Metro/borderlands run ok for you?

Edit: mmm your right, mines on High and its bouncing between 40's up to the 100's :S:

I don't have metro but borderlands while technically around 60 stutters and dips constantly. It worse than playing the witcher 3 with crossfire and that's saying something. That's with 15.7 but bear in mind BioShock wasn't that good for me with 15.5 either.

I'm a Nvidia user and I'm happy about this. Maybe this is finally the start of AMD getting their **** together as far as their proprietary Linux driver? I'm not holding my breath, but I'll be very happy if this is a trend. I look forward to a day where I have a real choice when I choose to replace my outrageously overpriced video card years from now and I can choose Team Green or Team Red, rather than the current situation of "I'd be an idiot to not buy Team Green".

I'm hoping for as much of an increase that 15.5 had for me :D

Agreed, Linux has been one of those things where everyone says 'it's about choice!' but for so long we couldn't really choose video cards and get the performance they were supposed to get. I've stuck with nVidia for many years because of it.

I don't have an AMD GPU yet, you're looking at Samsai for that but he's currently sick.

I'll try and test out a couple of games tonight on one of my 290x-es and see how it plays.

Wasn't Alien: Isolation already announced on Linux, at least semi-officially, like in the list of the big SteamOS games that were in a sale a few monthes ago (some being planned for later in 2015, like Payday 2 or Saints Row 4)?

Indeed, but here we can rediscover it again. Just for fun.
