Road Redemption Released For Linux, It's In Bad Shape

I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but Road Redemption has finally released their promised Linux version (Early Access). The problem isn't only how long this took with it being years over-due after being promised for Linux in 2013, but how bad it is right now. Something fishy is going on, as it says "Trial version" in the corner.

I've tried it myself, and it utterly crawls along at sub-10FPS all the time. Honestly, I wouldn't even consider buying it right now, but we will update you if they manage to fix whatever is causing such horrific performance. People are right to be annoyed, but if it comes out properly with performance fixed up, it's better than not coming out at all after promises.

About the game
Road Redemption takes place in a post-apocalyptic America, ruled by a brutal dictator. Without telling anyone, your gang leader has decided to head to the capital on a desperate assassination attempt. When the government catches him, the consequences for your gang, and everyone you know and love, will be devastating.

It's up to you and your fellow gang members to race across hundreds of miles of dangerous highways in order to track down your derelict leader before the government does. What you do next is up to you. Do you try to stop him in order to protect your family and friends from punishment, or do you join him in a risky attempt at ending the oppression once and for all? Kind of strange there is no announcement in the Steam product page news thingy. It's almost like they released this by mistake or something.

Number 1.) It is early access (think of the way rust used to be)
Number 2.) The developer said that they accidentally released the wrong build

Just give it a day or two and you should be fine.

I guess that's why it's not on GOG yet. They don't accept low quality games.

UPDATE: It looks like game isn't even beta, but alpha. The article is misleading then - it wasn't released, it was made available for testing.

Purchased after bug was ironed out. Running smoothly here on an i7-2600 & gtx 960, 1080p @ beautiful

It was doing at least 40 FPS @ 1080p on my 970. Devs published the wrong build.

I get random crashes in co-op races with 2 xbox controllers on linux.

Like i said earlier, a release is a release. Version numbers aside, it's a paid product, early access is not a get out clause.

Quoting: TheBossI think people put too much power in the term "release". If it's available to purchase with real world money, and to download and play then it's released.

... and this is why they should stop selling pre-releases.

Quoting: TheBossEarly Access/Alpha/Beta etc are all made up terms by developers.

Alpha/beta/pre-release/release candidate/stable/unstable are all technical terms that describes the current state of the software. It's well established terms - however only within the software developer communities. The consumer/mainstream have the attitude quoted at the beginning of this post. And that is - again - why they should stop selling pre-releases. It's become the new "releases". When a game finally is at a release state, it's "old" in the mind of the market. That is just fucked up.

Quoting: TheBossMy point: it's just a word(s), you're still paying for an advertised product, so it should work to some real degree here.

Yes it should! And I do clearly understand your perspective as a regular gamer.
Games are buggy enough at release state today, we don't need the market flooded by beta builds and test builds. It's doing us all a disfavour. This is why "Early Access" never should be part of the Steam marketplace. It could perhaps be a special program accessible via some crowd sourcing gateway or something.

Still - a pre-release is what it is. And it should be ignored completely by the mainstream. Preferably it shouldn't be there at all.

About early access and beta build:
I cannot say I like it, BUT without this option many games would not exist! Small independent development teams don't have the money and manpower to test things on different hardware and software configurations. So if you want a lot of different and sometimes unusual games, you have to live with early access and you should think about supporting a game you like by testing it and give feedback to the developers.
If you just want to be a consumer who pays and plays, just go and buy a gaming console. I for myself sometimes really like it to be a part of the development and I especially like it when developers communicate with their players and take their ideas into account. What I really don't like is closed development without any communication with the gamers using "early access" to sell unfinished crap.
