The Long Dark, the beautiful survival game is now officially available for SteamOS & Linux today, it has also been updated with Steam Controller support.
I guess I need to buy it now to test it out with my new toy then! Oh dear, just bought it.
It will be very interesting to play a survival game that's really about battling the elements, I wonder how lonely the game feels. I might have to write up some thoughts on it when my internet behaves enough to download it.
Talking about the Linux release, Hinterland Studio mentioned how they were internally testing it directly on SteamOS ahead of the release for us so hopefully it's seen plenty of polish.
While it's not finished and it's currently in Early Access, The Long Dark has been available for Windows since September last year so we've had a bit of a wait. Seems like it may have been worth it though, lots of early impressions on it have been giving it a promising outlook.
About the game (Official)
The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and everything Mother Nature can throw at you.

Are there real tough weather in it? I've always wanted a survival game with heavy storms, deadly cold, whipping rain, all with proper audio that makes me shutter to the bone.
The blizzards are absolutely fantastic. Tons of snow limiting visibility, your character shuttering and a very accurate wind sound effect, make to be one impressive blizzard.

Not the same genre, but there's a great underwater storm sequence in SOMA I had to think of when I read your description...
The only downside of the game is the hunger system... the character simply wants to eat too much. Sometimes it seems like he is eating more than an average healthy person in our real world... In a survival situation a man can go without food for days without too much trouble... and in extreme situations it can go more than a month before he dies. In this game you pretty much have to eat two or three steaks a night... A NIGHT. Yeah, you have to sleep 3 hours, eat, sleep again, eat, and continue sleeping. I don't know about others but I never eat and never even feel hungry at night, even if I am awake and working... This is however not a very big deal, but an issue nontheless. At least it is an incentive to hunt more, which is fun.
While this sounds like it overshot the target, a few things you have to take into account. In a frozen wasteland (I don't know where you sleep in this game, but probably not in a warm cosy place) your body uses much more energy than in our real world. So yeah the character will want to eat more than normal.
Also, I have been known to wake up in the middle of the night because of hunger... from time to time...
But like I said, this sounds like the game has gone too far.
