Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition has finally released for SteamOS/Linux. I have picked up a copy, and I am downloading right now to give you some thoughts.

Notice: It's missing the executable. The Linux version hasn't been matched up to any of the ways to purchase it looking at SteamDB. I have informed Larian on twitter.
Update: It's now downloading.

It couldn't have released on a worse day for me. I ended up accidentally playing through Portal in its entirety before going to bed last night, so tired is an understatement. I am also ill, so it wasn't the best idea. I will try to give it some thoughts once I have put a little time into it.

Important: AMD video cards might have rendering defects. This is a game issue and it will be fixed soon.

Initial thoughts and port report
It launches fine, hooray! It loads up in Windowed mode by default for me, if I still had my dual-monitor setup I would have liked this. It's easier to get games working correctly if they start in windowed mode, but now I'm on one screen I couldn't care less. So full-screen 4K resolution it is!

You are greeted with a two-character setup screen with quite a few options and classes to pick for each one. You always have two it seems, and they can be any mixture of male/female, female/female or whatever you want.

Performance wise everything seems fine, with 4K resolution and everything up at Ultra it has been running really smoothly without a hint of stutter. GRID Autosport is the only other game I've been able to get a smooth 4K experience with, so this is really massive points in its favour.

I am testing it with the Steam Controller and it's working like a true dream. The buttons are all mapped correctly, and it just works great. Feels really responsive, and was certainly built well for a gamepad.

I do find it amusing that with your characters, you control both of them when talking to each other. Can't say I've seen that done before, and it certainly makes it interesting, but also easier to do what you want.

Issues
Once you are in-game, you cannot switch to a gamepad/Steam Controller. You can only switch on the main menu, a little annoying, but not a major issue. Same for switching to mouse, the control method cannot be changed in-game.

It pollutes your home folder with a "Larian Studios" folder, seriously developers, please stop doing this.

Overall, it's one of the highest quality ports I've seen for a while performance wise for me. Really liking it.

About the game (Official)

Quoting: Avehicle7887what GPU are you running?

It's a GeForce GT 630, i.e. one of the smaller, budget-level nvidia cards. I used to have a GeForce 8600 GTS , but it died on me. Raw performance-wise, as "measured" by the FPS counter in glxgears, or vertex through-put in other benchmarks, those two cards are about the same, interestingly. Of course, the GT 630 has support for newer OpenGL features, and way more memory than the 8600 GTS.

Thanks, quite impressive for an old spec system running D: OS. I have to say such great performance makes up for the game's delay big time.

Quoting: KeyrockHowever, in terms of writing, it's plain to see (to me at least) how far BioWare has fallen off. The very game series you cited as an example, Mass Effect, serves as a perfect example of that very thing. Look at the writing from Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 1 had a pretty good and concise story with a memorable and interesting antagonist. By Mass Effect 3 the story had devolved into a mess with little rhyme or reason other than to make Shepard into Space Jesus

This we agree with. The series took a dive in ME3 - so much so that I didn't even care to finish it, and that's a first for me with a BioWare game. Personally I do however think ME2 were the best of them overall, while the first had a better "rpg" feel. And the first two were, in my humble opinion of course, fantastic. No less. They were fantastic adventures full of surprises and magical moments.

But my main point is, to write off BioWare because of one-two titles (I assume you too have little good to say about DA2) of SIX latest releases just isn't fair at all, especially since it's not even the last two. So even though we essentially agree I have much, much more faith in BioWare than that. Everyone are allowed a misstep or two.

Maybe we might even make enough money so that our next masterpiece might appeal to an even broader audience with its technical whizbangery and state-of-the-art visuals.

Ok hold on for a minute: You are one of the indie game companies? I was not aware of that, I thought you spoke as a regular gamer. Had I known that I'd never express myself this undiplomatic. Please accept my apologies.

Ah but I only present my point of view - and only that. I am aware that I am in the minority of much of what I express. I'm ok with that. :)

I enjoy these discussions, and hope I am not too much of an annoyance to others. Thanks, Tuubi and Keyrock, for an interesting exchange of views. :)

Heh, no, I'm not. Not that I never thought of it, but boring old business software development keeps us busy enough. Anyway, I just kept the "we" from your previous sentence:
Quoting: BeamboomThen it's outdated and cheap and could (should!) have been made better - cause now we can.

Reading my post now does kinda leave the impression that I was getting a bit defensive. Maybe I was, but what I was defending was low budget indies with great ideas and content, not myself.

And apologies to everyone else for my part in taking this so far off topic, once again.

Yayy game is patched for AMD cards, so 1080p High settings framerate is between 30 and 40 fps an no glitches (on 250X 1 GB ,latest Crimson driver, Mint). Now this is my GOTY on Linux :)

Yeah, got some unpredicted money influx and bought this. Runs fine so far (everything maxed out on Phenom 2 X6 [email protected], GTX760) and I enjoy the game. Only annoying point: I don't use a controller and camera rotation is really slow, only a few degrees everytime I move the cursor from one edge of the screen to the other, takes 6-7 strokes for a 180 degrees turn.
Does anybody know a workaround for that? I couldn't find a setting for that in the option dialogs.

Playing the GOG version on my wife Ubuntu 15.04 and my Ubuntu 15.10 machines.

The default graphics config is quite high-end, just dropped the graphics quality to "low" but kept the resolution at full/native while playing in Windowed mode on both Nvidia 720 and 780GTX its very playable and we're both enjoying the experience.

ADD: I tweaked the settings on my (higher-spec'ed) machine, upping most to high and just leaving AA off and it no performance impact. I must also add it looks great even on "low" on the 720, both running Nvidia propitiatory drivers.

Highly recommend the game as you will get a lot of game for your money (most games even most AAA cant say the same these days). Well done Larian finally doing a good job on the Tux version, never thought it would happen!

One thing that's annoying the hell out of me, though:

~/Larian\ Studios/

Bad Larian. That's not where you should put the configuration, player profile and save games. At all.
