Note: This is an editorial, please remember this is my opinion. I'm going to talk about other websites, some people don't think I should be allowed to do that as a webmaster and I disagree. Being a webmaster doesn't mean I'm not a reader and fan of other sites, just to make that clear.

A few websites are reporting that Steam for Linux has hit 1900 games after only hitting 1800 around nine days ago, this is false. We are currently on 1820.

To get the correct reading you need to filter by Games only, and by Release Date. The default sorting option "Relevance" includes all games on Linux now, and games yet to come out. This took no time at all to figure out, I simply clicked the last page in the list to see games not yet available.

Sadly, some websites instantly reported on it hitting that milestone without bothering to look into how we got 100 games in nine days (which is an insanely quick time for so many games to come over).

I'm going to be brutally honest, as soon as I saw the figure I knew it was wrong, and I don't entirely get how Phoronix and Softpedia didn't notice. Those two websites comment on every milestone we hit (we do also), so they know how long ago we hit 1800. Part of journalism is researching, even for a few minutes, or so I thought anyway.

I pointed this out to both websites, Phoronix has yet to clarify it, and Softpedia blocked us on twitter, seriously:

Don't like the truth pointed out I guess, or was it how blunt I was about it? Who knows, but at least Softpedia corrected themselves.

As always, I am here to simply give you the real news as we get it. We aren't in it for money, ad clicks, or anything, so we aren't in a rush to push content out that ends up being completely wrong. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: tomtommeLucky you that you are not in it for the money. Lucky you that you do not have to rush out content. Others have to, to make a living. AS long as they also deliver quality content most of The time some mistakes in between are fine with me. On phoronix the oversight was instantly cought by a reader in the comments. Its easy to say that you knew the number is wrong, after you commented there too. I do not geht why you make a story out of this.
No one has to rush out unresearched junk for money, that's clickbaiting, no one appreciates it. I pointed it out to Phoronix and Softpedia as soon as I saw it on twitter, my commenting on Phoronix was an additional step hours later as he has still not corrected it.

I made a "story" out of it because I don't like false news spreading, it's quite simple.

Possibly that's the reason... at least your comment in the phoronix forum sounds pretty abrasive to me. Don't know what you've written on softpedia though.

It's how I normally speak, I'm not going to mince words any more and tread softly around websites which constantly put out junk. We are here to give the correct news, and not shuvvel out articles for advert clicks.

Sometimes its good to remember own hard times and to stay polite. Help each other instead of fighting. You point a Finger here and your tone sounds almost arrogant.

I did try to help, by pointing out they were wrong. I was greeted with hostility by Softpedia's reply to me of "wtf is this then" (whch they have since deleted), and then they blocked me.

Quoting: reaVerSo social justice is hitting the Linux gaming scene. We may have to campaign our asses out of this one guys.

Don't know how this has anything to do with social justice, but it's still a bad (and maybe even an unethical) thing to do.

lolwut, it's completely ethical to point out totally wrong news and spread the truth, how is that unethical? Weird.

Quoting: GuestCool that your site is doing okay purely on just donations alone.

I can't believe there are people here defending the spread of misinformation.

The poor "journalists"! How will they eat if they can't get all the clicks by hook or by crook?!

I'm not Jeddunk, but I assumed they were referring to softpedia blocking you, not to you reporting.
And I too don't see what this has to do with social justice, or why social justice (as in "the fair and just relation between the individual and society") is something we should campaign against according to reaVer.
At least softpedia unblocked you, so no need to bring out the pitchforks.

Quoting: KeyrockAlso, do we need to report a "milestone" every 100 now? Once you hit 1000, maybe report milestones at 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000, etc.

This.

At this time I am less interested in sheer numbers because we're doing well enough in this regard. We have reached a threshold where it's no longer really interesting if 1,000, 2,000 or 10,000 games are available. Like with Windows, the largest part of these games isn't terribly good, so this number isn't telling us much anymore. From this point on I'd be more interested in a measurement of -quality- games we're getting. Like the % of current top 50 bestselling games on Steam that have a Linux version available. I don't think such a number is readily available, though.
jedidiah_lnx Jan 29, 2016
Quoting: ThePierrasseSo what's the current amount then? Can't really blame those websites as the Steam games filters are really confusing (sometimes it says that we're at 1913 games and sometimes at 1825...)

I don't like these numbers. That just reflects the number of purchasable items I think. I'm not sure it reflects the distinct number of games that are available. I don't like misleading numbers because they could lead to people getting p*ssed off when they realize the number is bogus. I would rather the number reflect something that a consumer would relate to. Expansion packs and whatnot should be labeled as such.

Oh cool, what about server and Internet fees though? I'm annoyed that we still don't have a good and widely-used standard for p2p distributed Internet, because that would make the whole thing much easier and cheaper. Freenet is the only p2p web solution I've tried and it just hasn't become all that popular sadly.

Damn right, countering false information with truth, and spreading truth in general, is pretty much the definition of real journalism.

Everything comes out of my own pocket, and will continue to do so. People are free to send games over however, not going to pass up free games.

And yes, real journalism also involves pointing out flaws in others work, not just pumping out articles.

Hopefully costs aren't too high then! And yes, journalism does, can, and should be critical of other journalists, pointing out the ones who are wrong, as well as the ones who get it right. Journalists are supposed to be the watchdogs for truth. Ignore anyone who says otherwise! ^n.n^

I'm going to print this out, and stick it above my monitor.

I get the whole picture, but have you seen the lineup of forthcoming games that just appeared on Steam displaying the SteamOS/Linux icon? I maintained my "explore" window up to date and usually get between 3 to 4 games per day untill yesterday. Today I got 3 complete screens with 11 games to "explore" and I don't know yet if there isn't a fourth. These games are all advertising SteamOS/Linux support... Sorry but wtf is going on?!?!?!

For me here in Europe is 1915 Games Released for Steam :)

http://store.steampowered.com/search/?snr=1_4_4__12&term=#sort_by=_ASC&category1=998&os=linux&page=1

so technically they are correct that are over 1900 Games on Steam :P
(This search I assume is the search that many people did without the knowledge of what games are released...)

BUT.....

This search lists unreleased and upcoming titles and also some of the games that are listed on this search are listed twice , yes twice the same game title.
