New user statistics refresh, come check out the new data from Linux gamers

By - | Views: 33,368
Our user statistics page has been updated again, and it should now happen at the end of every month automatically.

Here we can see that Ubuntu, is clearly the most popular Linux distribution amongst our Linux gaming visitors, with Arch coming in second place again (out of 1645 users):

This time, as requested, I added in a gamepad selector along with the graph to go with it, which clearly shows right now the "Steam Controller" being the most popular. I imagine that will change with more people inputting their preference, as we only had 271 people answer it so far:

What I am most surprised about, is out of 924 users, KDE Plasma is the most popular desktop environment. I never seem to be able to personally get along with it, but it's cool to see how popular it is:

For those, and more visit the statistics page.

As always, if you have suggestions on how to make it all more interesting, fire away in the comments. I want to make the page useful, and it has grown quite a bit since the initial release of it.

What I would like feedback on, is how often to remind users to make sure their details are up to date, and what the preferred method would be? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: cxphergmailcomXbox 360 controller is by far the best out of box experience.
The Logitech controllers are pretty much straight up clones with a slightly different design. Don't know about relative quality as I've never tried an Xbox controller, and my F310 is barely working after a couple of years of use (had to fix a broken cable and remove a mystery piece of plastic that was jamming one of the triggers), but at least they're just as compatible.

I also have a F310, and after experiencing an Xbox 360, PS3, and Steam controller, I can safely say the logitech is easily and by far the worst of the bunch.

The triggers have far too much spring pressure, making them uncomfortable to use for any length of time, and the right trigger is now flaking out after only 1 year of serious use. The top right bumper's plastic leaf-spring spring snapped (you mystery plastic, perhaps?), making it loose. The joysticks are acceptable, but also require much more force to move around compared to other controllers. And the way the grips sink in so much toward the front means it's more comfortable to use the bumpers than it is the triggers, which require a more awkward grip angle.

The best part about the F310 is the D-pad, which is the best I've used since the Genesis controller. The diamond face buttons are also rather nice.

Even with the excellent D-pad, I would not recommend Logitech controllers to anyone :\

But that's just my 0.02 cents :)

I am an OpenSUSE user and did not put any information related to my system. I am a little bit surprised that Plasma / KDE 5 is the top-leading DM here while so few use OpenSUSE.

True, it took several months for the trigger springs to loosen a bit (or my fingers to adjust?) so that I'm not in agony after a longer racing game session. Although I'm so used to them now that a Dual Shock 3's triggers felt too small and loose for comfort when I tried one a while back.

It was just a tiny black fragment of plastic rattling inside the controller. I couldn't see any place it could have broken off, hence the mystery.

I bought the F310 for about 20 € when it was on sale at a local supermarket. The quality is what I'd expect for a cheap controller, so I'm not too bothered by it. I wouldn't buy MS hardware even if I had the cash and I've never liked Sony's gamepads since the original PS, so the Steam Controller would be pretty much my only real choice.

Used an Xbox 360 gamepad for years (I have two of them, actually) but once I got a Steam Controller, I have pretty much abandoned them. The Steam Controller, in my opinion, is the best gamepad ever made. The touchpads are so vastly superior to an analog stick that it's not even a contest. And the customization that allows it to support literally any game ever, even ones designed without controller support, is amazing. It is the first controller ever that gives mouse and keyboard a run for its money. I would have never considered trying to play a game like Stellaris with a gamepad, but with the with Steam Controller, it's actually a viable option.

Quoting: apocalyptechNow, I'm sure that much of what I'm used to could be replicated in other WMs/DEs with enough configuration work, but it's difficult to argue with the ability to just keep on using essentially the same config I've been using since 2000/2001 or so.
Well, that's the case, at least for KDE. But I'll grant you the second part.

Quoting: cxphergmailcomWhen steam adds DS4 support, some devs may choose to use it but if you use GOG for gaming extensively, might be better to stick to Xbox 360 controller.

The DS4 will be supported exactly the same way the Steam Controller is. So every game with steam controller support should support the DS4 (except for missing in-game icons, maybe?)

Question, Liam: Why using some png images and not the svg ones in the article? For some compatibility reason?

i updated my information, so one more xbox360 user here..

I bought this mainly so that I can play some local co-ops with my daughter (battleblock theatre, rocket league..) ... but I've tried some gaming with it myself too...
it's quite nice for some games, but I have a question: do people really play there 1st person rpgs and shooter with it?
many of them seem like "controller optimized" but when I tried, it's all wobbly aiming and not smooth turning/looking around at all.. so how do you people do it? I still play mostly with keyboard and mouse these types of games..

Same here. I had to choose between Xbox 360 and Steam Controller as the favorite one.
For the only game I'm playing with controller, Rocket League, I'm using the Xbox gamepad, so that is it...

Quoting: ElectricPrismSteam Controller is a Headcrab grafted upon a X360 host. Except instead of being one controller it's two controllers mashed together. You have to choose to completely ignore the top half or the bottom half to hold it where it feels meant to be.

Having one left joystick is a huge disappointment for FPS gaming. It fails as a FPS console controller to provide equal utility to my 15 years of playing FPS skill. The bumpers are awesome. The indentation on the left track pad sucks. It should have been raised or left out to feel like a DPad at all.

It is interesting how different feeling I have for steam controller. I think it is best controller especially for FPS games by far. I really hate Xbox/PS controllers in any FPS style games because they are so inaccurate and need lots of aiming help to ease up aiming. With Steam controller, I can play FPS games pretty well.

Quoting: ElectricPrismOn and the steam controller batteries -- how the fuck are you supposed to pry those out of the wings without a knife & slashing your hand. Fuck those batteries hold super tight & never come out.

It is super easy to take out batteries - just press the little hinges to up, and batteries will pop out automatically?

And nobody is mentionning the Steam Controller's gyroscope that's awesome for precise aiming while in sniper mode or middle to long range shots (it acts like a mouse dps reducer). I use it too in Grid Autosports so that it plays the role of a Steering wheel. It needs a little tweaking but the experience is great too.
