I loved the first Half-Life, so the chance to revisit it in Black Mesa [Steam, Official Site] was too enticing to pass up, sadly though you may want to hold off for now.

Note: Black Mesa isn’t yet finished and it’s in Early Access, as it’s missing the final chapter “Xen” of the Half-Life experience. People are quite torn on that part of the game as it is, so you may still enjoy it without it.

When you first dive in, you will be struck by how well they have managed to capture the feel of the original Half-Life, a lot of it is the same, but it looks so much better.

With better textures and better lighting, it is a much better looking game that could get people interested in Half-Life that may be put off by the ageing original Valve-built version. Sadly, for us, that’s where the fun stops right now.

It is a very unstable! It has crashed multiple times for me making actually playing and testing it a real pain. It crashes every single time in the same spot, which is at the very start when you’re going to enter the test chamber.

I’ve looked over the Steam forum for it, and it appears quite a number of people are also having issues with the Linux version. Some people have managed to get past that section, but there’s other crashes, texture issues and lighting issues.

If you want to skip that section, you can enable the developer console in the options, and then press "`" to bring up the console and enter in this command:
sv_unlockedchapters 5
That will essentially skip that entire part, but where's the fun in that?

If you’re wanting to pick it up, I would advise waiting a while until the Linux version is not only more stable, but to also wait for the game's main story to be complete for the full experience.

I will keep an eye on it, and let you know when the issues are solved. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Good to know not everyone is affected :), lots of reports of it on Steam sadly.

Remember to not put a chair into the particle beam in the beginning of the game.

I played through Black Mesa last weekend. Ubuntu 16.04, GTX 970 with proprietary drivers. I also had the crashes in the test chamber and in a later level where you have to explode a standing helicopter. I saved and loaded my way through the test chamber and shoved some corpses away from the helicopter to get through those. They announced this as a Linux Beta so I was not angry about it. But besides from these two things everything else was ultra smooth and well done. No crashes, hiccups whatsoever. So I would not call this game unstable. Just be aware that there are these bugs in the beta.

Ubuntu 16.04, GTX 970, always crashing. Deleting libstdc++, fuxung fps, setting mat_queue_mode, nothing helps. Will skip this game for now.

no problem for me

I played all the chapters they've released twice without a crash or any other problem. Guess I'm lucky?

This is not Valve's Half-Life or episodes, this is Black Mesa.

No problems for me either, 7 hours played without a single crash or bug.

Quoting: robvvHave completed it on my OpenSUSE system, however I did have a repeated crash very early on in the game. Managed to spam-save my way through it!

Ended up having to do the same thing in the Test Chamber on my Antergos desktop. Other than that - and a weird texture in the elevator - the game has been running very well for me.
Can't say the same for my laptop - System76 Gazelle - since the game can't even launch there for some reason. Also Antergos.

I played it a bit. It works fine. The only issue is that from times to time the game freezes and the"Loading" message is displayed. This wouldn't be a big problem but it takes a while to load... and they happen relatively often, which is a deal breaker for me. It breaks the immersion, and for me, if the immersion is broken then the whole game is broken.

I won't continue playing it for a while. I am quite busy IRL anyway but if this won't get fixed eventually, when I will want to play this game for real, I will be very pissed.

Anyway, so far I've only played for 50 minutes so I still qualify for a no-questions-asked refund. Hopefully it won't come to that.

EDIT: I see in the comments that people are experiencing many crashes. This didn't happen to me at all during my 1-hour play. Guess I'm "lucky"? Anyway, the problem seems to be much bigger than I thought if different people have different issues... it means something's very wrong with the port.
