You thought Feral Interactive had done enough Linux ports this year? Wrong. Total War: WARHAMMER [Steam, Feral Site] now has a release date for Linux!

It releases on Tuesday 22nd of November, so not long to wait at all! It's another title from Feral to come to Linux first, as the Mac version has seen a delay.

I will hopefully have an overview of the Linux version ready for release day, stay tuned!

About the game
The Old World echoes to the clamour of ceaseless battle. The only constant is WAR!

A fantasy strategy game of legendary proportions, Total War: WARHAMMER combines an addictive turn-based campaign of epic empire-building with explosive, colossal, real-time battles, all set in the vivid and incredible world of Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

Command four wholly different races: the Empire, the Dwarfs, the Vampire Counts and the Greenskins, each with their own unique characters, battlefield units and play style.

Lead your forces to war as one of eight Legendary Lords from the Warhammer Fantasy Battles World, arming them with fabled weapons, armour and deadly battle magic; hard-won in individual quest chains.

For the first time in a Total War game, harness storms of magical power to aid you in battle and take to the skies with flying creatures, from ferocious dragons and wyverns to gigantic griffons.

Feral is porting games a helluva lot faster than I can afford to buy them...

Hopefully this will be a "Game of the Year" type of bundle since looking at the Total Warhammer store page on Steam, it looks like the developer carved out a lot of key features to sell as DLC (seriously, there is a DLC to add blood and gore effects back into the game! Can you believe that?).

Otherwise, this is one to add to my wishlist and then wait for a good price on the "complete" edition.

Yeah, a Warhammer Fantasy game, of all settings, with Chaos and blood&gore as DLC. WTF?

Wow 1 week and another triple A title to put in my wish list. But Deus Ex comes first, after Dawn Of War 2 and all the expansion...

Quoting: FredOI didn't think we'd see the day that a Total War game comes to Linux before the MAC. This blog post from Aspyr seems to sum up the situation well though: https://blog.aspyr.com/2016/11/01/state-mac-gaming/

Anyway I'm getting this for sure - I've been drooling over it long enough.

Haha what are the odds I was reading the exact same post just now and even thought of adding it to my comment :)

I have to say recently I've been more upset with Apple and Mac than what I am with Microsoft and Windows. Vulkan had a real shot of being the hands down graphics API of choice for all games fullstop. With DX12 being Win10 only and Vulkan being cross-platform across all systems including Windows up to XP, Vulkan could have been the one reason we saw a lot more PC game releases (Linux, Win, Mac).

However with Apple choosing to block Vulkan and have this Metal crap on their systems, they have effectively created this wonderful divide, again leaving us all back at square one. So devs are going to do the following: Vulkan or DX12 for Windows? Lets go with DX12 besides we don't really wanna support Android and Linux isn't really a deciding factor. Besides if we decide to go with a Mac version aswell we have to use Metal so there really isn't any need for Vulkan. And thanks to Apple that is where it ends. No Linux version once again.
You are right, their Metal API is meaningless and divisive. Not only this, but their strategy when it comes to hardware is to blame as well.

When you look at all these AAA games ported by Feral, you can't help but think that Linux gaming is still tightly tied to Mac gaming. I don't think a company like Feral could keep that pace if they only had Linux as a target platform.

The fact that Apple can't keep pace due to their illogical hardware choices is a danger for the whole porting industry. They have lame iMacs and pro graphics MacPro workstations, but nothing in-between. That's one of the many reasons why I left them years ago.

On another hand, gamers who want to avoid Microsoft could possibly consider switching to Linux more often if Apple isn't an alternative anymore, but that's only speculation.

nVidia's recent GTX 1050 Ti could possibly change the whole situation...

You know I would be very interested in a rough breakdown in how Port sales are split between Mac and Linux for the like of Feral, Aspyr and VP, even more so on a game to game basis as it would be illuminating to see what % sales Linux gets of 'Demanding' AAA titles compared to Mac. Is it 50/50 or does Mac still have a lead due to the historical larger install base.

Have a look at that article from some incredible website:

It's getting old but I think it's still relevant.

Thanks, I probably read those when it was posted, but good stuff. However its all for less demanding games where even an integrated GPU can handle the work. I am curious specifically about the demanding games that the porting houses are bringing to us as they stretch the limits of a MAC's hardware much more given that they cant just upgrade the CPU / GPU etc on a whim like Linux/Windows users.

But thats all for another article perhaps, here is about how much I want TW:Warhammer :)

So Aspyr just released Jade Empire for Android, but no Linux?

I'm assuming there is no cross play between platforms just like the other War Hammer and Company of Heroes. This makes my decision to buy or not a lot tougher.
