Just a word of warning, the Nvidia 375.20 driver seems to have quite a number of issues in certain games bringing performance down a lot.

Not everyone will have issues, as it seems only certain people are affected. Some people have reported no issues, while others are being given black screens or outright terrible performance.

Nvidia recommend downgrading to the 375.10 driver.

The next 375.xx driver should have a fix available, but Nvidia said there is no workaround for the 375.20 driver. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Yeah, heh, I used to be an AMD fan too back in the day. My first AMD was an A80286-8.

Very simply: For the most part, Intel uses a LTR major-to-minor numbering system. The 'K' suffix indicates an unlocked multiplier for overclocking, similar to the 'Black' designation AMD uses. The 67** series is the current gen [Skylake] performance-tier desktop line, and the next-gen, performance-tier Kaby Lakes will be 77** when they're released.

You can pick up a 4GHz i7-6700K for about £240. Amazon ($80 cheaper than newegg). That's a current generation desktop Skylake CPU. The i7-6700K is the 4GHz overclockable version of the 3.4GHz i7-6700. Considering you can pick up the K-version for $300, definitely go with that.

Most of Intel's desktop line (including the i7-6700(K)) are 4-core chips with hyperthreading, which allows running two hardware threads on a single core. This makes it, functionally, an 8-core CPU to the OS. Granted, this isn't exactly the same as having 8 physical cores, but it works many times faster than the Piledriver module approach.

Don't be mislead by core-count differences though, an upgrade from a FX-8350 to a i7-6700 is pretty massive. Gaming is often more dependent on single-core performance, so you'll likely see the biggest improvements there.

The £1000+ chips are more high-end workstation/server chips. Sure you can use them for gaming too, but it's likely going to be a ton of overkill. The 5960X which I believe is what you were pricing, has 8 physical cores, but functions as a 16-core chip with hyperthreading enabled.

And yes, Vulkan has the advantage of being much less CPU-bound than OpenGL or DX11 (and below). I'm a huge advocate of Vulkan and OpenGL, but rendering isn't the only bottleneck to consider.

I just played a little bit of Dead Island Definitive with a GTX 970 and the driver 375.20 and the game run better than before.. At least, for me.

Ok Thanks for your help i bought this combo:

• Intel Core i7-6700 quad-core 3.4GHz (4GHz boost speed).
• Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4, 2666MHz.
• ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Socket LGA 1151 ATX motherboard.

For £540 from Maplins, I cannot get over the fact that after changing over motherboards Manjaro Linux stills boots and runs great, So far so good Mad Max is over 60fps with very high settings before outside car driving was fighting to get 30fps at Low settings, Deus EX still not looking great i'm on normal settings and seen some dips to below 30fps, But i need to tinker around with the settings a bit later on.

Oh and why does Manjaro Linux think i have 8 Cores on the I7-6700?

The only thing I noticed is (GTX970) that I get random slowdowns on XCOM2 when in the Avenger or in Cutscenes. Almost feels like a shader pipeline is completely overwhelmed.

I will downgrade tonight.

Yeah he did but i did not know it Hyperthreaded all the time, and would register as 8 Cores, I thought it would say something like 4 Cores - 8 Threads, But my bad, i'm learning slowly.

I wish that was an option...
But I run Debian Sid and the X Server was upgraded. 375.20 is the only driver that supports it.

I run Linux Mint 18 with a GTX 760 and noticed slight improvements without any crashes. GPU_test showed about 5 frames a second better in all tests but furmark. American Truck Simulator, GRID Autosport, Insurgency, CS:GO, Cities: Skylines ran a slight bit smoother but I can't prove it. 375.20 has been great so far. Thanks for posting about the new driver.

GeForce GTX 980 on Ubuntu 16.10, ARK performance has greatly decreased after installing 375.20. Had to go back to previous version.
