Early Access indie kart racing game, Hibby Kart, inspired by N64 classics

By - | Views: 11,271

A casual kart racing game currently in early access, Hibby Kart aims to replicate an experience similar to old N64 karting games such as Diddy Kong Racing. The game is built in Unity Engine while the visuals and animations look pretty slick. My first run on the starting track had me collecting what appear to be Bitcoins (I am unsure if that is intentional) which level up your kart.

Hibby Kart’s in-development status is clear from a few issues. Turning the graphics slider all the way up locked up my display server and mouse/cursor input is non-existent. You must use either a controller or the keyboard. Additionally, I was unable to get the audio working.

There are only three tracks available at the moment and not much gameplay to complete but the foundation looks solid and I hope Hibby Games can succeed at bringing one more title to a genre that is currently weak on Linux.

Hibby Games is an indie developer based in Canada and the early release is available now at Itch.io. It is not being worked on full-time but a quick check shows that Hibby Kart did reach Steam Greenlight and it was approved, so it may come to Steam sometime.

“It's actually taking a long time. The first release (just time trial driving by yourself) took about a year. And that's starting with borrowed code from a previous 8 month project. This update adding ai guys to race against took about 5 months. It's not being worked on full time though, I jump between it, and another game. The artist, I've hired for only 2 days a week because that's all I can afford. So full time, 5 month updates could probably drop to just over 2 months, or less” source

This looks great. Even the first person perspective looks very playable, which is how I prefer to play racing games. I hope the game gets finished.

Are Itch.io alphas like Steam and GOG Early Access where you pay once and get access to all future builds?

Yes they are. Every in-development game I have on Itch has been kept up to date, with Astrokill being the most recent. Games update silently in the background like they do on Steam.
