FOSS Linux game launcher 'Lutris' has a new bug-fix release out

By - | Views: 18,973

It's free, it's open source and it helps you manage your thousand+ game library, a fresh update of the game launcher Lutris has arrived.

Not a game store but a launcher. Letting you add games from GOG, Humble, Steam and more along with compatibility layers like Wine/Proton and emulators too. It's an all-in-one solution for gaming on Linux. It's also seen plenty of recognition with even Epic Games granting them a small sum. Lutris can make managing things like Origin or Battle.Net on Linux with Wine a much smoother experience, thanks to people writing various scripts to automate everything they need to be setup nicely.

The latest update 0.5.7 appears to be mainly a cleaning-up release with code styling fixes, updates to the translation files, better Debian Linux packaging and back-end things like that. There's a few user-facing updates too like having a default directory for manually added games, allowing to easily remove them. They've also migrated MESS games to MAME, there's a new no-GUI option for RPCS3, a fix for GalliumNine conflicts with DXVK and they're also now setting "RADV_DEBUG=zerovram" which should improve DirectX 12 games with vkd3d running on an AMD GPU.

See more on the official Lutris site or GitHub.

What I would like to see is a "complete DE" based on a fullscreen gamepad controlled Lutris UI, for sofa gaming. A Lutris based SteamOS (BPM) concept. Probably an unrealistically huge undertaking for the Lutris team, but it would be awesome nonetheless.

"One launcher to rule them all".

Edit: It's just a wish I have... Else, keep doing your awesome work, making gaming on Linux easier.

There might be a way to use GameHub for this, as it can be controller-driven. Not exactly the prettiest big-picture interface, and it lacks some of Lutris's nice under-the-hood features such as managing multiple Wine versions, but it does integrate with Steam/Gog/Humble and can be configured to launch emulators.

Another approach might be for someone (more talented than I) to write a plugin for an existing frontend (like Kodi, etc) that integrates with Lutris's underlying functionality.

Because I use Retropie/Recalbox on mon Rpi2... It's based on EmulationStation... Couldn't there be a way to fork it for desktop use? Like in showing the different store fronts/launchers instead of emulators? Just my two cents, even if I would like, I have no skills in the matter.

Sorry... Just brainstorming, here.

Looks like EmulationStation can be built and run on a desktop already, no forking necessary. I'd imagine there would still considerable work to be done "gluing" the UI to Lutris. But, certainly a neat idea.

There already is a EmulationStation for PC.

I believe that this is possible, fork a version of it and use with Lutris.

However, the update has not yet arrived in the official PPA. The version 0.5.6 is still current:

I found that it is packaged in Ubuntu 20.04 and Pop_OS due to that. Started digging into why it is not in Debian yet. Apparently they were using icons nit friendly with the DFSG. But they recently got that sorted, if the bug reports are to be believed.
So hopefully soonish, we will have packages in the 'motherland', which usually means we will have great packaging quality.

Same concept as GamerOS but Lutris instead of Steam Big Picture mode.

Yep! That's the idea. But running Lutris in GamerOS is harder than running Steam in Lutris. And Lutris is neutral in the sense that it's not focused on one store over any other.
