Only a few days ago Proton Experimental saw an update to pull in NVIDIA DLSS support for DirectX 12 and as of today's update this has expanded to DirectX 11 titles too.

It's still currently disabled by default with you needing to make a small adjustment to turn it on. This can be added to individual games by setting PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% in the launch options. Or you can try PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% with "dxgi.nvapiHack = False" in a DXVK config file.

There's also an update to newer DXVK that includes the latest development work and you should find that Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is now playable with it. The Proton changelog can be found here.

Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:

For an explainer in text form:

  1. Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
  2. Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
  4. Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
  5. From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyAnd isn't FSR sort of . . . more broadly applicable? 'Cause, like, doesn't DLSS have to be "trained" on a per game basis? Whereas, doesn't FSR not have to do that? So in theory, FSR would work with any game, whereas DLSS would work on (any game whose devs have made the effort to "train" DLSS on their game).
DLSS >= 2.x is a generic temporal upsampler: One version works for all current and future games, as long as they provide it with the data it needs (previous frames, motion vectors and perhaps other things). When a game has proper TAA, it already uses this data by itself, so DLSS implementation efforts are within scope for a lots of devs.

Thing is FSR is completely useless for everyone without 4k display, as it looks just terrible with lower resolutions. It's pure postprocessing, so it's easy to implement. But what is it good for when you can use it everywhere, but don't want to regardless...

Though I really hope Intel's XeSS (basically the same as DLSS 2.x, but open source) beats DLSS so we can leave annoying vendor locks behind without compromising on quality (unlike FSR)...

Eh? FSR still works serious magic at both 900p and 720p upscaled to 1920x1080. As I said earlier, I'm playing Cyberpunk at 900p upscaling to 4K. There's definite degradation, but it's still stunning AND it plays at 60fps too.

It is not possible for it to look stunning, as the game's TAA is already kind of crappy in native 1440p.

Wrong. As my video proves. Absolutely jaw dropping game.

Maybe if you do like a frame by frame analysis, with side by side comparison of FSR vs native? Sure. But realistically, you won't notice, because you'll be immersed in a stunning 60fps world.

Would you please not try forcing your opinion onto me? I personally can live with you being able to play with more than slightly degraded IQ. I found FSR to look terrible in every game, unlike DLSS 2(.2). You won't be able to change what I can perceive on my display...

I guess you had a typo here?

Forcing...? What, like you're doing to me right now by claiming FSR looks terrible? I don't know what to say. Looks terrible for you - okay. I'm not arguing. I'm saying it looks amazing to me, and I provided video proof of that. Enjoy DLSS though - it's meant to be excellent.

This is weird!
I tested this feature on Ubuntu 20.04 with an RTX 2060 SUPER, 470.74 (ppa) drivers and Experimental Proton with PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%  and it didn't work..

It seems the game, Death Stranding, doesn't detect my Nvidia card.

Yeah it does not work, same NVIDIA version as you with an RTX 3080, i tried on Cyberpunk 2077 and Doom Eternal on proton experimental i also tried it on Borderlands 3. weird because some other people managed to get good result on the same games, seems like there is no good explanation to why its not working.
