Steering Wheel manager Oversteer expands supported wheels in 0.7.0

By - | Views: 18,336

Oversteer continues to be the best way to setup and configure Steering Wheels on Linux. Oversteer 0.7.0 is out now and expands support for more wheels. Since, like a lot of other special hardware, the original manufacturer doesn't support Linux, community efforts like this are essential.

Here's what's new:

  • Added Logitech G923, Thrustmaster T150 and T500RS to the list of supported wheels.
  • Added German, Finnish and Turkish translations.
  • Install udev rules by default in more sensible locations.
  • Bug fixes.

I can easily attest to how great it is and how it really does make it simple. It continues working great with my own Logitech G29 to help adjust various settings. Depending on what hardware you have, Oversteer supports a lot. Features include emulation mode support, rotation range, force feedback gain, device profiles, the ability to combine accelerator/brakes pedals for games that use just one axis. If you combine it with the new-lg4ff driver, you get even more features.

Requires building from source on Debian derivatives, T150 support depends on a driver that I didn't manage to get to work properly (the wheel is not recognised in Farming Simulator at all, the steering axis not recognised in ETS2/ATS).

I'll pass for now.

Yes: no snap or a flatpak yet, then. But WHEN?

Ain't gonna waste time (and raise blood pressure) with doing things ancient archaic way

I need the same thing... but for flight sticks, then I can play Elite: Dangerous in Linux (currently using all the crazy stuff set up with my Thrustmaster Warthog). I do have a G27 I should use this on it.

Good article, unfortunately not 100%: accurate, and this is not your fault. Oversteer GitHub page mentioned support of T500RS while it is not.

Indeed I am the one working on T500RS driver and I can say we're far from getting working driver... Kimplul did a great job for T300RS and even though T500 is based in the same code it's unfortunately not working straight away.
USB reverse engineering is much of a work and I don't have many time to dedicate these days.

I hope this comment will help people looking for it working for T500

I'm open to suggestions for a better wording. Being supported by Oversteer doesn't mean that the wheel is fully working, although the axes and buttons normally do and that's the reason to add them. The README says to check support for those wheels in the respective projects. I've changed the wording many times to try to make it clear but someone will always get it wrong I guess. I don't want to mislead anyone but I'd like to get more people to know these projects.

Wonder if the Raildriver controller will ever be able to operate in Linux?

No offense here, I understand Oversteer is a wrapper tool to help showing devices inputs and eventually settings them up.
I intended to use it as well when I discovered that T500RS driver didn't exists...

My best proposal would be to add some side notes to the drive compatibility list to explain the support is much limited; at least for the T500RS one.

I can't commit to showing updated information about wheel support in my README. I don't have the time nor the devices to test myself or do the research. I could remove all references to non Logitech devices but this wouldn't help the other projects. What would be best?
