Manage your Linux PC remotely as KDE Connect lands on iPhone and iPad

By - | Views: 22,315

Do you have an iPad or an iPhone laying around or as one of your main devices? Now you can use them to interact with your Linux PC a little easier. KDE Connect has just released onto the Apple App Store, opening up more options for those that want it.

Here's the current features it supports:

  • Shared clipboard: copy and paste between your devices.
  • Share files and URLs to your computer from any app.
  • Virtual touchpad: Use your phone screen as your computer's touchpad.
  • Remote presentation remote: control a laser pointer on the screen of your computer by moving your phone around.
  • Remote commands: run commands on your computer from your phone.
  • End-to-end TLS encryption: your information is safe.

Find all the links to download on the KDE website. App Store download here.

As a big KDE fan and an iPhone user, this pleases me. Being able to just quickly send anything over from my phone that I discover and want to deal with on my Linux PC is great.

Quoting: ripper81358While i have used KDE Plasma for many years i am not happy with KDE Connect. It is a great tool but for some reason the connection to my androidphone fails as soon as the screen is locked.

I have to unlock the phone while my PC is running, otherwise my phone isn't detected by KDE Connect. I don't know if this caused by Android or my Kubuntu system, but this issue is rendering KDE Connect useless for me.

I can pause and restart Clementine (including internet radio) and YouTube playback from the lock screen with it...

This looks like Android battery optimizations. In the Android settings you should have an option to disable any battery-related restrictions for KDE Connect. It looks like this on my phablet under Applications → KDE Connect → Battery → No restrictions.

I've got "Allow battery usage in background", but "Battery usage optimized". Works all fine. (Android 9)

Battery optimization is turned off for KDE Connect on my phone. But thank you for your advice.

Quoting: CyborgZetaI have never, ever, gotten KDE Connect to work. The one thing "problem" I've had in my almost two years of Linux that I've never been able to solve. Sorry, just needed to rant a bit.
Weird. I just today for this article loaded it onto my iPhone. Loaded up KDE Connect on Fedora, paired them, started transferring files. It was blissfully easy.

Have been doing the same for donkeys years on mine, Although an android phone.

Assumed it was already on IOS TBH

Nifty fact when someone rings you whilst having spotify/YT or whatever it pauses it until you hang the phone up! Godsend at times .

This is because modern Amdroid versions stop the apps when the phone is off. You need to allow it to stay running. I forget what/where it is to do that.

Quoting: ssj17vegetaI never thought Linux enthusiasts could ever use iOS.

I use the best tool I can find for the required purpose. Android is a complete disaster with updates and I no longer trust Google in any way whatsoever. Do I wish my iPhone was more open? Yes, but it works just fine for everything I need it to do. Apple is overbearing but they are one of the only big tech companies with anything like a semblance of respect for its users.

I run FOSS where I can, but my phone is in the same tech bucket as my car or game console. It is what it is.
