Heroic Games Launcher 2.6.0 out now adding auto updates, new theme

By - | Views: 28,532

Heroic Games Launcher continues advancing letting you manage your games from GOG, Epic Games and more on Linux, Steam Deck, macOS and Windows. Easily my favourite launcher next to Steam. In case you missed it, be sure to check out my recent interview with the creator.

Pictured - the new Midnight Mirage theme.

This release continues their work to make it as feature-filled as possible, while also working to ensure it's stable so there's a mixture of smaller features and bug fixes.

Highlights of what's new in version 2.6.0:

  • New Default Theme 'Midnight Mirage'
  • Game Settings will open on a dialog now instead of a new page, making it easier to access them.
  • New item on the game submenu called 'Extra Info' will show extra information like HowLongToBeat and Game Score
  • Heroic will show progress for individual files when moving a game
  • Better caching for GOG games information
  • [Linux/macOS] When the selected wine version was not found Heroic will search and suggest another one
  • [macOS] Wine manager was enabled and it is possible to download Wine Crossover and Wine-Staging directly from Heroic.
  • Added setting to auto-update games and also to skip updates for a specific game
  • Sidebar now will resize on drag event
  • Now it is possible to see the download size and platform of the game on the Downloads manager
  • Added a button to retry the auto-detection of the saves game path for games that supports cloud sync saves
  • [Windows] Arm64 build available

Bug Fixes:

  • Heroic will block the installation when changing the platform on the install dialog to avoid corrupting the game
  • Fixes and improvements on GOG games setup and installation
  • Fix game status not working properly sometimes
  • Ui fixes and improvements
  • Several other fixes and improvements

Love the Launcher, but why did they hide the HLTB info behind two additional clicks and put it into a dialog window?! - having that info directly available was one of the cool features of the previous versions and could only have been improved by displaying it for imported games as well.

Otherwise all it's missing is maybe a little bit performance improvements, the option to only display installed titles and given the size of the libraries these days: 'auto-scroll'.

Very nice, I recently had an issue of Wine not found, and this should make it clearer and easier in similar cases.

The new theme looks good, though it looks like the existing Nord Dark theme I currently use for it.

Game settings dialog box is nice as well, makes it easier to dismiss the setting and immediately start your game to try out the new setting.

More cloud save stuff, nice, nice. And the updates/download stuff is neat too.

None of it is particularly big and game-changing like the previous "Add Game" sideload option, but these are nice QoL stuff as I've used the launcher as my main launcher/library for anything not on Steam.

Very nice! Seems to work very well. The only complaint I had when trying it is that the scroll position of the list is not remembered when you go back to it. I was checking the install size of a few games and having to start at the top again after going back was slightly annoying.

Also noticed that the "nile" dev is working on Heroic now. So I'm hopeful that the amazon games stuff might eventually make it into Heroic as well so I have all my alternative sources in one place.

He already contributed the GoG implementation which happend a lot earlier than the invention of nile.

Yeah, it is complicated to make everyone happy. Hahaha
But the problem with the HLTB on the game page was also that it was too much information there. That page is already too much cluttered on installed games. So adding more was complicated.

But we are designing a new game page for the future, probably heroic 3.0, that will make those informations easier to find and without cluttering the page.

And about performance, yes, I think we have improved a lot from 2.3 to 2.6 but there is still work to do and we have some refactoring going on to improve that.

At least it doesn't take 2 min to open 😅

I know you need to play nice with Epic and all that, but let's not sugarcoat things, 2m19.5s here (it's slightly faster now that I moved it to the nvme drive).
