More game industry news for you today. Respawn, developer of Titanfall and Apex Legends, have announced that two early-stage games have been cancelled and 100s of staff have been reportedly laid off.
The statement from Respawn was shared on X/Twitter:
IGN seemed to get a tip-off on this early, as they had a news article go up about the same time as the announcement from Respawn where they reported "roughly 100 individuals are affected by the changes, including a mix of developers, publishing, and QA workers on Apex Legends, as well as smaller groups of individuals on the Jedi team and on the incubation projects".
An additional report from Bloomberg noted that one of the cancelled games was an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe, with the total staff numbers affected around 300-400 in total across Respawn and their owner Electronic Arts.
My heart goes to the devs, and this is a reminder that for each good EA does (recent open sourcing) there is probably ten bad things before and ahead of it.

Doesn't matter that Respawn somehow delivers a best sellers every time that EA management looks away, and delivers mediocre work when paid attention to.
EA exco: Lets pay more attention because that way I can say I changed things and forced the line up, so I can exceed my badly incentived KPI so I can get my bonus. Doesn't matter that we just hurt the long term industry, AI can take up the slack, right?
