Microsoft / Xbox Game Studios and developer The Coalition have announced Gears of War is getting a remaster with Gears of War: Reloaded. It's coming to Steam on August 26th priced at $39.99.
So not only are we getting a prequel with Gears of War: E-Day, but an upgraded edition of the first game. Nice!
Interestingly, from the Xbox announcement, Microsoft seem to have begun rebranding their PC gaming efforts a little bit. In the store / platform list they said it will be available on "Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam, and arrives on day one with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass".
Xbox PC huh?
As for what it will have: "Gears of War: Reloaded includes the full breadth of content from the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, delivering the most complete version of the original game to date. Players will gain immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no additional cost — this includes the bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression."
A Microsoft Account is not required for it, without it you'll be able to do cross-play. However, they said if you sign-in you'll get cross-progression and cross-platform invites.
Features they said to expect from it:
- 4K resolution.
- 60 FPS in Campaign.
- 120 FPS in Multiplayer.
- High Dynamic Range (HDR).
- Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos.
- 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio.
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).
- 4K assets and remastered textures.
- Enhanced post-processing visual effects.
- Improved shadows and reflections.
- Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing.
- Zero loading screens during Campaign.
The only bit that really concerns me, is that the Steam page already notes it will use Easy Anti-Cheat. However, Microsoft did at least enable that in Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection so hopefully they will again for Linux Desktop / Steam Deck. You can see the status of more games with anti-cheat on our dedicated compatibility page.
And I'm not worried about Anti-Cheat. They usually activate Proton support for their own games, even for older titles.
I always thought the series was slightly over-rated (albeit, fun story/characters carrying it a bit) but the impact it had on the FPS genre is unmistakable. Walls. Walls, everywhere! Duck over the walls to shoot. Stay behind walls! Run from wall to wall!
