Retro dungeon crawler Brany Skeldalu gets a Linux version and source code re-release

Gates of Skeldal (Czech: Brány Skeldalu) originally released in 1998 and recently it gained a Native Linux version along with a source code re-release.

The original MS-DOS game was ported to Windows back in 2005, then made freeware in 2007 with a source code release back in 2008. As of May 20th this year, they did a re-release of the source code as the developer mentioned on Steam:

The Gates of Skeldal source code has now been released under the MIT license.

This isn't entirely new, as the source code was publicly available even before its Steam release, but we hope this formal release will help increase its reach.

Now you can modify the game, improve it, help with bug fixes and testing, compile it on all sorts of weird hardware, and so on.

Please note that only the source code is released under the MIT license, not the graphics, game design, sound, or other assets, and definitely not the brand!

A few days later, a Linux version was then released on Steam too. Nice little win for game preservation.

Good for them. Glad to see some developers caring about preservation, even against their evil publisher overlords' wishes.

If anyone is interested in nitty-gritty details about the remastering, there's an article in Czech about it (use translator or learn Czech to read it :P)

Now this game is not what I'd expect to see here. And I'm pleasantly surprised it made it! Not sure how current gamers will look at it, especially those not from its country of origin, but man... I have so many fond memories of it. Gonna buy it to support Jindřich, who is also an awesome person.
