3DMark just released a version for macOS and they are actually planning a Linux version.

What is it? A tool for benchmarking, testing, and comparing PC performance. It's incredibly popular and certainly would make benchmarking and system comparisons easier on Linux.

The good news is that in the comments on Steam for the macOS release post, a developer confirmed "Linux version is still planned, but unfortunately we do not know yet when". This isn't the first time they've said so, with Linux support mentioned back in May 2024 with the release of the Steel Nomad benchmark.

Hopefully it won't be too much longer.

At least for stress testing we have the recently released OCCT that's also coming to Steam. It's nice to see more companies actively working on Linux support for their apps. It's great we have a lot of games now thanks to Proton, but Linux still needs to catch up in other areas like this.

This tool has nearly 30 years of history. It is kinda funny to see it support Linux only now.

Making port to DEAD gaming platform? WHAT FOR?
But don't stop people from doing stupid sh**, because there is significant chance this will be mildly entertaining.

They're taking their sweet time for the full release. A native 3DMark Wild Life Extreme benchmark exists since about two years ago, but only Michael from Phoronix seems to have access to it.

Isn't there also Unigine and Geekbench for Linux?

Great to see Linux gaining recognition.

While 3DMark can run with Proton, the overall experience is very very broken… most likely because it's calling low-level Windows API that Wine does not implement. For starters, it doesn't even recognize your Steam purchases unless you fiddle with the wine registry. Then you have to disable systeminfo for it not to hang during a test. But this also means they show up as 'unknown GPU' and 'Unknown'.

It's literally the definition of 'Borked' right nowemoji

Would be fine. I bought the thing on Steam and it would be great to use again. Really miss it, since switching to Linux.

Conspiracy theory:
They don't support Linux, yet, because it would be obvious for the gaming public that using Linux produces consistently higher benchmark scores, so they are paid by Microsoft to not allow that. The manner how it is borked on Linux proves that.
Now Futuremark just want to extort more money from MS. That's why the macOS version. It's just a kind of warning shot.

They released the macOS version so there's a native Apple Silicon version instead of people just running the iOS version like they were doing. Running the iOS version on an Apple Silicon Mac gives the incorrect scores. If I'm ever able to get a new Mac mini like I want, it'll be cool to be able to benchmark it.

As far as the conspiracy theory above goes. As bitter towards my old boss and UL as I am for being laid off last year due to cutbacks, just weeks before their IPO. (I was in infotainment testing here in Detroit.) I don't think it's anything like that, even as an anti-capitalist. I'm glad that they're taking Linux seriously and taking their time working on a native version.

Is the picture a screenshot from a game? If so, does anyone know which game?

It's just from their 3DMark Steel Nomad benchmark.

I don't think it's anything like that,

Yeah, as with 99.9 % of all conspiracy theories:
It's just something a random Bob on the Internet pulled out of his ass...

But it COULD be true! :-D

@Tevur Hey, I'll have you know some of the stuff I pull out of my ass is absolutely amazing!
. . . Hang on, that didn't end up sounding quite the way I'd hoped . . .

One of the developers shared some more info in the Steam comments.

Yes, there is going to be a Linux version. If it was ready, it would be out. It is not and it is decisively harder project than the mac version as it has far more tests and features. That is part of the reason why we tackled mac first. The other part is that every system that would be running Linux can right now already be tested by installing Windows dual boot, while Macs cannot really do that (well, you could have run iOS version, but it was decisively not optimal way to test the systems and it ran against platform vsync cap on high end macs).

Oh yeah, the guys who wanted to test the performance of the Legion Go S could just boot Win11 to see how it performed with SteamOS... wait... wait, wasn't there something?

Telling Linux users to dual boot so they can benchmark their hardware in Windows is a strange suggestion. We want to benchmark our operating systems and not just the hardware. I'm not sure how someone who specializes in benchmarking software doesn't understand that.
