KDE Plasma 6.4 brings improvements for accessibility, colour rendering, tablet support and more

KDE Plasma 6.4 has arrived bringing lots of modern enhancements to my favourite Linux desktop environment, and what's used on SteamOS / Steam Deck Desktop Mode.

One of the major new additions is per-workspace tiling options. Tiling is a great feature to keep all your windows tidy and being able to quickly swap workspaces and have different tiling sounds great. So on one workspace you could have two windows snapped together side by side, on another you could have one in each corner and so on - you get the idea.

Another accessibility upgrade for the Wayland session is the inclusion of keyboard numpad keys to move the mouse pointer, three-finger touchpad pinch to zoom in / out, improved keyboard navigation throughout Plasma, improved screen reader usability and more.

There's been some subtle theme changes as well, all in the name of making things more readable with tweaks to the contrast between the foreground and background elements. On top of that the Info Centre energy page and the menu editor have been overhauled, and there's a new Animations settings page putting them all in one place.

For users of drawing tablets, configuring them should be easier now too with improvements to buttons and calibration settings. Plasma also now supports "relative mode", making the stylus act more like a mouse so you can continue using it outside of making art.

As for colour options, there's a new HDR calibration wizard in Plasma 6.4. There's a whole lot more like new Wayland protocol support, as usual I'm just cherry-picking stuff that sounded cool.

See the release page for more.

If you can spare some cash, don't forget to support the KDE devs. They're working tirelessly to bring us this amazing Desktop Environment completely for free and I think they deserve all the support emoji

Plasma 6 has been an excellent series - so slick, so much attention to detail. And Wayland has finally unlocked the higher refresh rate of my monitor at 4K, which is lovely.

Just a shame that Wayland doesn't support remembering window positions, which is extra-annoying when Plasma has all these features built into it to do just that... but they don't work at all in Wayland.

So Firefox remembers its position, Steam remembers its position, but none of the KDE apps, like Dolphin will. Unless I move back to X11.

It's a small issue, but it's been bugging me for a while.

Some more focus on A11Y is always welcome. As the saying goes: we're all merely temporarily able-bodied.

The workspace enhancements are neat, I guess, but until we have monitor-independent workspace switching it's just not great.
