Ubuntu isn't the only Linux distribution planning a big change, as Manjaro KDE Plasma also now plans to move to Wayland.
In a forum post from Manjaro's KDE head Artem Grinev titled "Manjaro KDE Plasma is planned to move to Wayland", they said "I was using Wayland for quite a while and things are more or less smooth (NVIDIA proprietary driver). I think it’s time for Manjaro to move to Wayland by default for both Plasma session and SDDM.".
It's a short and to the point post, with a small FAQ and some voting options for Manjaro forum members to note how their current Wayland experience is.

Hopefully when the move is done it goes smoothly.
More details in the forum post.

Good move, although I thought they were already defaulting to Wayland in their KDE releases.

wayland is terrible, they shouldn't force someone to use something. linux is becoming more like windows forcing garbage on users.

Re:
You can choose a different distribution, like Debian, or you can hack on the code yourself. But it seems unlikely X11 will be removed from the repositories of most distributions any time soon, so it seems likely you'll have the ability to fallback on X11 for a few years yet.

@lib-inst you copy pasted the same comment you did on the other article saying Ubuntu will go with Wayland.
You don't give any argument why, in your specific case, Wayland seems so bad.
You are just spreading FUD, shame on you.

As a nvidia-hybrid user, i had no big luck with wayland under manjaro kde, but that was more than a year ago. With that same machine i have no problems under endeavour with kde/wayland for months now. So, yeah, maybe i take a peak again at manjaro just to look how it is. And for that other discussion: for me, defaulting to one thing is not forcing.

wayland is terribleWell, maybe for you and your use case. It works objectively better than xorg for me. (Not on Manjaro though.)

It is kinda funny to see how the Linux press talks all about Fedora moving full on to Wayland and removing the X11 Sessions, Ubuntu and now Manjaro. Sad to see openSUSE is too small for ppl to know Aeon and Kalpa are doing this since a solid year by now and already proven that this is very well possible with no downsides for the users.

tbh, for the absolute majority of users, wayland is a nobrainer nowadays.
Pretty much the only downside compared to X11 left for me is session-restore and that is already on the horizon.
And we're just talking about the DEFAULT here, not about a complete removal of the X11 session as with Fedora/Gnome!

I definitely had a few issues last year with Wayland, but they were very minor and in one case I had to fall back to use an application (which, of course, was an old application that likely will never make the jump to Wayland).
For the most part, the experience was better - and those cases where Wayland did not work, I was thankfully able to fall back.
Complete removal of X11 just isn't an option IMO. But replacement as default very much is.

Are there issues? Of course. But this isn't a commercial product. When I pay for something then I want it to be perfect. But with OSS I see it more like being part of a journey.
Same with what's happening with gaming on Linux. I go back to the time we had only WINE and the only thing which could be translated was DirecX 9. This journey has been awesome. And so will the Wayland one.

All I can say is that I trust the Canonical Desktop Team to do a more competent job of it than I do the Manjaro Team. My experience with Manjaro on hybrid GPUs was not all that great. Limiting driver options and using archaic tools such as Bumblebee was not the best of decisions.
Otherwise, this change is only logical given that KDE has already forced the issue ..
