Heroes of Science and Fiction is the new name for Silence of the Siren from Oxymoron Games, as they try to pull in more fans of Heroes of Might and Magic. The name change came along with a major update to the game.

What is it? A turn-based strategy game where several different space-faring civilisations fight over control of a distant star system. Explore what's left on the planets and secure resources to build mighty cities. Raise powerful armies and defeat your opponents on the battlefield. Overall, it's a pretty great take on modernised HoMM-styled strategy and it has a Very Positive rating from players on Steam.

Explaining why they changed the name they said:

To address the elephant in the room first though, your eyes are not misleading you - after carefully considering this step for months, we decided to change the name of the game from Silence of the Siren to the long-term working title, Heroes of Science and Fiction. You're no doubt curious why, so here are the main reasons:

  • It was really easy to mix up the name with other games in the genre, and we saw too many cases of for example Youtubers struggling to remember the name.
  • The new name should make it much more obvious to HoMM fans that this game is in the same genre as the beloved classic, which is really important when players see it on any list on Steam and decide whether to have a closer look.

The new update includes a full Map Editor, Steam Workshop integration and quite a lot of new content. There's a whole new planet with a 6-phase day-night cycle, 7 new maps, new neutral units, a Beta version of a map generator and various smaller changes.

A new mini trailer was released to highlight the features in the update:

They should have just named it Heroes of Strength and Sorcery

Uhh, the old name was ok, the new one is risky, I hope they at least consulted it with an IP lawyer. Do I think it's infringing? No, I don't. But it heavily relies on an association to an established and trademarked name, so ubi's lawyers might find an angle here.

Wow, that's surprising. I really liked the old name personally. It was at least interesting. Who's the siren? Why does it need silencing or was silenced? New name is just a rip off of HoMM ... !!

I suppose they are correct that it'll get them more initial clicks. Will that transition to more sales?

"Heroes of Scifi" suggests a game that is referencing classic sci-fi authors or their characters (from cpt Nemo to cpt Kirk to Han Solo and so on). Definitely deeply misleading name.

How can such a change not backfire? It looks like a troll.

Looking at the feedback in steam comments, they will be changing it back sooner than later...

That old title was impossible to remember for me, and I spent months to years trying. Every couple of months I thought to look at the news, or catch up on the progress, and every time I had to track the game down in proper sleuth fashion, because I just could not make it stick to my brain. I couldn't find the damn thing in my wishlist, is how bad it was - the effect it had was actually remarkable.

That said, the new title is incredibly generic. I would never advise this normally, but these devs should outsource the title and pick some decent proposal. They clearly are... having some issues with naming things. Hey, I can relate, but I'm not selling anything.

Honestly I just think changing the name AT ALL while already having done multiple next fests, tons of announcements, early access launch, etc... is just a horrible idea. Now when this game launches, if it was on someones wishlist, they won't even know wtf it is. "huh heroes of what? I don't remember adding this? delete."

This must be a joke, it's such a bad name.

There is no hope to draw the attention of HOMM fans from anything other than HOMM3. They already have the game they want, just make peace with that.

I actually find the new name funny, so I don't mind it, but yeah, it won't get the stated goal.
