Embark Studios have reconfirmed their for THE FINALS to continue working with Proton for Linux / SteamOS and Steam Deck players.

Back in early July we had Embark Studios detail new anti-cheat plans for THE FINALS, which caused some concern amongst Linux players since it could end up unplayable as we've seen with various other games. They quickly confirmed the game would continue to work though.

The key though, is that THE FINALS is not "supported" but they will ensure it's not intentionally blocked. In the latest Steam update they've posted the below to reassure Linux platform players:

Steam Deck and Proton Support

We noticed the concern about Linux following our last update. We’re testing everything across all platforms, and have made it very clear to our partners that Proton and Steam Deck are important to our development plans. While we don’t officially support Steam Deck due to our required dependence on Proton Experimental, we are committed to ensuring compatibility, and we work with external partners to fix issues before we ship a patch. The experience of every player is important to us. Despite many factors, we are still dedicated to supporting it because we know it matters. However, general Wine support is not tested, and native Linux support is not planned.

Really great to see, hopefully more Linux players will actually take a look at THE FINALS given their repeated statements on it. Nice that a few bigger games like it aren't blocking us.

And that kind of statement is perfectly fine. And I appreciate that!

We, Linux gamers, do not expect absolute commitment to create a native experience. We just need a declaration that they will not get in our way by blocking Linux like that clown Tim Sweeney or EA.

Honestly, that's all we can ask for. Nobody is demanding a company to build up in-house Linux competency to natively support a OS that's growing, but still not exactly a market share behemoth. Not to actively hinder their games running on Linux is good enough, IMHO.

What makes me really angry is these studios (looking at Epic, EA, Riot Games among others) who don't have programmers competent enough to implement cheat resiliency directly in their games where it belongs, and then blame Linux for being too free and its users for being too tech-savy, so their intrusive bandaid Anti-Cheat solutions won't really work there. Personally, it doesn't affect me all that much, looking at the abysmal quality of the games these people make, but it's hard to deny that it does slow down Linux growth if these games aren't running on it.

I am hoping that they continue this same stance with Arc Raiders. Why? Because that game has the potential to become the standard bearer for what is possible for multiplayer AAA games on Linux to become. The Finals enjoys a degree of popularity, but it's not a breakout success when compared to some of the other holdouts. Arc Raiders on the other hand, has a chance to become just that.
