Vintage Story has some of the most interesting game mechanics I've seen in a survival game, but it's a little brutal - so I'm keen for this new Adventure Mode.

After the news a few months ago about the game Hytale being cancelled, the developers of Vintage Story posted how they were inviting developers to come work for them. This led to another post in July talking about how they now plan to make an Adventure Mode for Vintage Story, although they haven't settled on a name yet.

For the latest big update to Vintage Story it adds in lots of new ocean content including 33 new fish, coral reefs and large waves. They've also improved clouds, added a bunch of new blocks, you can now tame and ride Elk, healing items now gradually heal instead of being instant, a player revive system for multiplayer was added, various story adjustments, you can now name your sailboat and attach shields and lots more.

They've also disabled purchasing on their itch.io page, so now you have to get it direct (it's not on Steam or other stores). They claim that itch.io haven't paid them "for over 3 months". In their Discord, the Vintage Story developers expanded on this and said itch are "withholding a six figure sum of our revenue share".

I first heard about this game one or two month ago and it all sounds almost too good to be true emoji

I really hope for a steam release!
That's weird about Itch. Something happening there?

It seems like there is a larger story there regarding itch.io. Is it an isolated dispute, or a more prevalent problem?

Don't hold your hopes for a Steam release any time soon. The devs will not hit Steam until they are convinced the game is going to be an instant hit. Something about, you only get one chance to make a first impression on Steam, better not blow it up.

Not weird at all.
Plenty of stories about Itch not paying at all or extremely delayed, being absurdly slow with their customer service if they do reply at all, not having done any noticeable development on their client for years, shutting down threads where people complain about this (after all, why fix issues when you can close threads in which people complain nobody fixes issues), etc.

As an indie dev, I'd use Itch for very early, pre-pre-pre alpha development, but I'd never ever count on it for revenue.

The whole service seems run by incompetent and/or chronically overworked people.

It's not like it offers discoverability, anyway (nowhere near a strong enough userbase for that) - might as well go fully homegrown like Vintage Story or Starsector.

I spent quite some of my time translating vintagestory to german.
But at some point a new contributor came along and broke several translations. I tried to fix them and even asked for help on the discord, but instead of getting help they were just arguing why the broken translations are actually right whilst disregarding all my arguments.
I havent touched vintagestory since then and the german translation sucks :/
