DOOM Eternal gets modding and DOOM: The Dark Ages gets an endless arena mode

Big updates for id Software games DOOM Eternal and DOOM: The Dark Ages have landed and they both sound pretty great.

For DOOM Eternal, the PC Mods Update update enables you to grab over 650 mods made by the community. It includes a new launcher, after being in Beta since last year. The new launcher for DOOM Eternal gives you quick access between the base game and mods. This includes a built-in modding browser, as it does not use Steam Workshop. They've also expanded the DOOM Eternal: idStudio modding tool to include content from all base campaign maps, along with some PvP asset packs, DLC1 & 2 content wads and a Graveyard asset pack for beginners

I've tested and the new launcher does not run with Proton 9.0-4, which is the current stable Proton. However, it did load up fine with the recent Proton 10.0-2 Beta release. To actually download any mods though, it does require a Bethesda account. Logging in and downloading mods with Proton 10 also works.

Testing a quick mod for a demo and yep - all working just fine on Proton 10.

For DOOM: The Dark Ages, Update 2 brings the Ripatorium, a new endless arena mode (with three arenas), two new DOOM Slayer skins and a loopable demo for the Benchmark Mode. Plus a bunch of other smaller improvements and bug fixes.

Yay for Doom. Now if they'd just open source id Tech 5 already... Literally free goodwill potential. lol

Carmack had to fight tooth and nail to get that last source code released. No chance Microsoft is letting go of anything ever again. Especially since they're using idTech.

Semigod genious and FOSS enthusiast John Carmack made all his beautifully optimized coding open-source (up until idtech4 iirc) so that many studios could learn and make their own (many and great) 3D engines we had for a while, until we landed with everyone using the unoptimized bloaty slop called Unreal Engine 5...
