I really hope Techland learned some lessons from Dying Light 2, as I have high hopes for Dying Light: The Beast. The latest trailer certainly makes it look fun, as short as it is.

Dying Light (the original) is still one of the best open-world zombie games, but Dying Light 2 just wasn't even close to being as good. This time around Techland seem to be putting a lot more effort into the overall body-horror aspect to it, with overhauled gore systems that look like a lot of fun to play with.

Check out the brief teaser trailer on some of it below:

From the press release: "We’ve overhauled the body damage system," explains Nathan Lemaire, Game Director. "We doubled the number of places on enemies - we call them Gore-Nodes - where players can inflict damage and the number of wounds or injuries that are visible on one single enemy. And we improved the precision of melee attacks - so the angle and trajectory of your strike defines what you hit and how your enemies react to it. So you can target and cut off limbs more precisely than ever!"

To have a realistic representation of gore in Dying Light: The Beast, the art team went to some lengths. "We’ve improved all of the visuals of wounds and injuries and match them with all of the body types. The research was extensive - I just hope no one ever looks up my browser history," says Dominik Wasieńko, Lead Character Artist.

They better watch out. That "You can target and cut off limbs" bit contravenes Mastercard's rules . . .

If this holds up, The Beast could be godlike. Please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good...

Also make you wonder, if they could make this the entire time then why the holy hell did we get the dead sock puppet DL2 at all. emoji

Dying Light 2 was largely rewritten in middle of development and was then rushed to the finish. I haven't heard anything similar happening with The Beast. So there's chance that it will actually be good.

For me personally, I don't care about realistic gore animation. I'm more interested in the game and how the game plays. I liked how the parkour responded in the first game, as well as the fighting controls. The expansive maps exploration and scenery also pulled me into that game. Not tried DL2 yet.

Oh it was so much worse on so many levels, I'm not going into that mess. The writing was never good in any Dying Light game, and it was never important despite Techland hyping DL2 up soo hard it was comical. The signs of trouble were alarmingly clear even before Chris Avellone was yeeted in the age of Me Too when two women accused him of sexual abuse, they later retracted this and paid a seven-figure settlement for libel.

As a huge Dying Light fan since release and Techland fan before that, DL2 was a supreme disappointment and even today remains a lackluster effort despite a million patches and reworked half the game.
The Beast looks to be the proper sequel and we can all forget the dud masquerading as it. Hell even Bad Blood was a better game and that failed fairly hard. I could argue even the Hellraid DLC was a more enjoyable experience than DL2.

Jank has always been a part of Techlands charm, but DL2 was all jank and not much to redeem it. It's better today, whatever meager solace that provides.

Anyway... please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good...

The writing has had some ups and downs over the years and though has been on upwards trend. Original Dead Island wasn't that memorable plotwise, the memorable things are more on environmental storytelling side. Dying Light was bit better, though not that memorable still. The Following DLC was more memorable and had better ending.

Dying Light 2 is again more ambitious with several moments were choices matter. Side quests are much worse, there's way too much filler and there's just handful good ones.

But still, can agree on that there's better writing out there, even in games.
