Valve are continuing their work to modernise more of Steam, and now we're finally getting bigger and more responsive store pages. It's currently only available in the Steam Beta, which is opt-in. It's not on the web just yet - app only. Once it's ready though, it will roll out everywhere.

Store pages have changed from 940px to be 1200px wide, and it's responsive so it will shrink back down. Most of that extra space went to the videos and description side, which has expanded by default to 780px wide. Giving you bigger videos, screenshots and more space for the full description to pull you in a bit more.

That's still a lot of space they could fill up with things, but the key in design is not to overload with information. At least now on wider monitors it doesn't look so ridiculously small.

Plus developers can now put up small videos inside their game descriptions. For a long time developers have been adding in GIFs, but their quality and sizing is pretty poor, so to help devs can now use MP4 or WebM clips. As part of this, Valve went back through all the GIFs developers uploaded (292,000 of them!) to swap them over to video files. The videos will auto-play just like GIFs, but they also now have a play/pause button on them.

Hitting pause on one clip currently pauses them all.

And of course, Valve just had to get into the argument of how to pronounce GIF didn't they. From the announcement:

Q. How do you pronounce GIF, with a hard G or a soft J?

A. We on the Steam team are pretty split on how to pronounce it. Regardless of which way you are inclined, be prepared for some heated debates should you share your opinion on the internet.

The only correct way is with a hard G, as in Graphics, not Jraphics. Anything else just sounds wrong. It stands for Graphics Interchange Format after all doesn't it, and it's a hill I will plant my flag down and die on.

But I liked the GIFs... Now a bunch of links are probably broken across Discord. lol

Also, just FYI: the creator of the file format says that it's a "J" sound in GIF. I already pronounced it that way, but I'm gonna go with what he says. That being said, I'm just saying and not trying to correct anyone. Say it how you want, just don't try to correct me either. :P

In Dutch you have to use the spitting sound for proper pronunciation of Gif.

So, first you do GRgrgrgr and then just add -if.

Barely noticed anything different. Though now that I'm actually paying attention to the videos, they do make the games look more enticing. And with better format, things probably will improve.

Been using computers for 45 years - First computer used Commodore Pet. then ZX81, ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, Atari ST, IBM PC, etc. As a person living in the UK, and mixing with other computer users, we all used to pronounce GIF with the J sound (like in Giraffe).

I believe this hard G way of pronouncing GIF originated in the USA, and I believe it was mispronounced by the media (news presenters, etc) and the mispronunciation stuck. As far as we British are concerned Americans pronounce lots of words wrong, for instance Aluminium.

Younger Brits have been following American TV, films and social media (Youtube) and picking up all the bad habits from there. There was a British guy I worked with, only 10 years younger than me, who had adopted the American pronunciation for "Petri" (Petri Dish) from watching American medical TV shows. The British pronunciation is "PET REE" while the American is "PEA TREE".

Like Linux_Rocks mentions above, the Creator of GIF pronounces it with the J sound. Say it however you want, just sharing the history of this issue. Probably the middle-ground to keep everyone happy is to call it a G.I.F. file.

I'd say this is the middle-ground to keep everybody equally unhappy. :D

As a German speaking, I'll just pronounce it German style, which happens to be the "G" variant, not the "J" one. :) (Just like the German pronunciation of "Giraffe", BTW!)

I'm sure we will be able to solve the pronunciation issue in a giffy.

Meanwhile the Epic storefront / launcher has not improved its responsiveness since launch.
This has to be one of the reasons to run a launcher like Heroic. Because Heroic actually cares about user experience.

And I'm sure it'd be even more responsive if they updated the client to be 64-bit!

Also, I pronounce it GIF. With a "guh". Not "Jif". Do I look like Shadow the Hedgehog to you?
