VoxeLibre is a great free and open source sandbox game, a Minecraft-like built on top of the Luanti (Minetest) game engine and a big new release v0.90 is out.

Bringing with it some more advanced features, you can now dynamically adjust the game settings while playing. There's a lot more that's new with this release including a brand new fire spread system, which they said is "more predictable and a single starting point can't burn too large an area – although they can still go quite far".

Some more of what's new includes:

  • Blazes have been renamed to Fire Elementals with improved behaviour and they said to expect new elemental mobs in the upcoming releases as it's a whole new class of mobs now.
  • Potions can now stack up to 16, and the duration / power of some potions were increased to be more useful.
  • The Ghast mob was reworked with a new model, new textures and improved behaviour.
  • A whole new set of Deepslate tools have been added.
  • Mobs that pick up armour from the ground will now drop it again when they die.
  • New golden decorative blocks were added.
  • Improvements the the creative mode inventory sorting.
  • Various other bug fixes and improvements.

See more in the release notes.

To get it you need to install Luanti and find VoxeLibre in the built-in content database downloader.

This is exciting, paired with the recent Luanti 5.13.0 update. Beautiful gold bars!

Thanks for covering this. :) What I find the most exciting for the early game is having enchanted deepslate pickaxes. They break the same blocks as stone pickaxes, so they're only meant for the basics (coal, iron, copper).

The deepslate tools have a 50% chance to be enchanted at craft time - on the crafting table - with a level-1 enchantment. And to make sure they're not overpowered, they can only be upgraded to level-2 enchantments on the anvil. The available enchantments are those that would also be possible on an enchantment table, so in the case of a pickaxe that's Efficiency, Unbreaking, Silk Touch and Fortune.

So now we can get a deepslate pickaxe with Unbreaking II, Efficiency II and Fortune II without an enchantment table. Sweet! :D It will probably take you about 2 stacks of deepslate to get all of these on a single pickaxes, but it really pays off.

By the way, the combat and spawning rebalancing are especially great for newbies and makes fighting hostiles less tedious. So it all adds up to a much friendlier start for less experienced players.

It seems they're making the mobs more 'legally distinct' from the ones in MC for obvious reasons.

Very good game with a very poor name 😄

Suggestions? Something that sounds great and is not used by any other project or company? emoji
