The original Splitgate will live on with player-hosted matches

At least this is one online game that won't be entirely killed off. Splitgate, the original one, will live on by allowing players to host matches.

If you missed the recent news, the developers announced they're reworking Splitgate 2 and they were going to entirely sunset the original Splitgate and were only exploring the possibility of letting players host matches with the dedicated servers turned off. Now, in a post on the official site, they've confirmed an update is coming.

To save you clicking about, here's the important bits:

What's Happening

Starting August 29, the original Splitgate will be moving to peer-to-peer as we focus our resources on rebuilding Splitgate 2. We know this game means the world to so many of you and we're not about to let that disappear. This means you'll still be able to play matches and experience the magic that made Splitgate special, just in a different way.

In addition to these changes, we have also added content to the game that was previously unreleased, stockpiled, or Work In Progress (WIP).

  • 13 WIP blockout arena maps -- Including some of the first maps shown in Splitgate 2
  • Simulation Juliet (an unreleased Takedown map)
  • Everyone gets access to all cosmetics -- For this reason, the Battle Pass, Rewards Center, Store, and Drops have been sunset

We have also made sure that community-favorite features remain playable, including Races and Map Creator!

How It Works

A player will host a match and act as the server. Other players can view the game in the server browser and join from there. If the host has saved Custom Maps, then those maps will be playable for the lobby.

Splitgate | Release Date: 24th May 2019

It'd be cool if more games did this. There's lots of games (and even some mods) in my Steam library that do have server hosting programs in the tools though. So it's at least not unheard of.

This sounds like exactly what the "Stop Killing Games" initiative aimed for. Noice!

Yesssss!

That's the way to do it. All games should do this. In fact, it should be illegal to shut down servers of an online game without providing a self-host option to those who bought the game.

Perfectly acceptable solution for me.

The correct way to do things, having a self hosting option is better than nothing at all. I'm sure people will now make discord groups and start to manage small communities.

Well done devs.

Major props to 1047 Games, they may have had their infamous moments, but this is the kind of moves legends make
