The popular Linux distro CachyOS has a big upgrade and some fun stuff for gamers

CachyOS is a popular choice for Linux gamers based on Arch Linux (like SteamOS is too), and the August update brings some big new features.

One interesting thing for gamers is their Proton-CachyOS, their own version of Valve's Proton to run Windows games on Linux that has various extras applied to it. With the latest CachyOS update they expanded the options available for it. Taken from the release notes:

Proton-CachyOS received several new features: a DLSS version upgrader and an option to force the latest preset. XeSS now has a similar version-upgrade feature. We’ve also made improvements for PhysX, and the required NVIDIA libraries are now bundled. On RDNA3 GPUs, you can easily enable FSR 4 with PROTON_FSR4_RDNA3_UPGRADE; this downloads the FSR4 library and sets the necessary variables automatically. NTSync can now be used with Proton-CachyOS by setting PROTON_USE_NTSYNC.

They've also introduced a new packages website, so you can check out what packages they're currently shipping. They've also updated the GRUB boot loader to automatically enable snapshots with the Btrfs file system, NVIDIA support was tweaked to enable S0ix sleep to provide low-power standby and their fork of arch-update with Cachy-Update is now available to give you a system tray indicator for available updates from official repositories and the AUR.

Cachyos is really a breath of fresh air. I use it on 4 machines so far, and a steamdeck

I also have a RDNA3 card with frames to spare for FSR4 so this feature will come in very handy...

This distro is neat. I got better gaming performance than Ubuntu 24.04. The customizations and the wiki are helpful for that.

Typing this from my cachy install right now! Loving this distro. So far super smooth sailing. It's blazing fast yes, but also very easy to install and configure and keep up to date.

Although, I thought they recommended to use Octopi to manage packages and updates? Is "cachy-update" different? I'll have to look...

Maybe the Octopi escaped. I hear they're very good at that.

Going to install this as my first Linux try this weekend. I can't wait still trying to figure out how to change the home folder location on a different drive. At least i know this

CachyOS - OS
KDE Plasma - Desktop
XFS - File System
Bootloader??? still looking into

this should be the fastest of the fast for gaming from the research i have looked at.

I have been using CachyOS since November 2024 as my daily driver. I have tried out a lot of other distributions and can honestly say that none of them are quite as good as CachyOS. There are a few that come close but for performance and overall experience, Cachy is the king. I recently ran a benchmark comparing Cyberpunk 2077 on PikaOS vs Cachy and Cachy was beating Pika by an average 40+ fps. Nobara was much closer but still not as fast as CachyOS.

CachyOS has been getting better all the time. Initially when I first tried it way back late last year I wasn't overly impressed and moved to EndeavourOS, but I have since moved back to CachyOS.

I'd say its probably the best NVIDIA supported Distro around atm. If you run AMD its also great but obviously so is many others, but not many really fine tune their distro to run well with NVIDIA like CACHY does.

On my ROG Ally I switched from bazzite to cachy os. Not because bazzite wouldn't be great for the ROG Ally, yet I wasn't able to get VR running.
Also I have the 2022 XG Mobile (6850M XT) with it, which does work on bazzite too (after I enabled it in Windows). Yet, only on cachy os I was able to get Steam VR and Monado up and running.
There are more steps involved to get it running fully and how I wanted. E.g. I prefer handheld deamon, so here are some tweaks needed, and I need to disable the igpu via all-ways-egpu when I want to run VR with full performance. Looks like copying the image from the egpu to the igpu does take some performance otherwise. Also I need an external monitor when operating it with the egpu only.
And now I can operate the ROG Ally in gaming mode for the handheld purpose of the device and still use it in desktop mode for VR when wanted.
And I'm impressed how I can go down to 8W TDP (with VRR enabled) and have a fluid experience in Fall Guys, while that was neither possible in Windows nor bazzite. Under 10W TDP I always got stutters there. And with 8W lets me play about 2h of Fall Guys, while before it wouldn't last an hour.
Cachy os is for sure a bit more effort and more tricky to setup than bazzite (e.g. you need to sign files manually for secure boot), yet once you got the hang of it... it's a really nice experience.
