Made in the spirit of Westwood classics like Command & Conquer and Red Alert, Dying Breed really does look awesome and it's releasing October 7th. Developed by Sarnayer with publishing from MicroProse Software, it looks incredibly promising.

I definitely miss the days of playing through games like this for hours and hours, and it really does look the part. Base building? Check! Resource gathering? Check! FMV cut-scenes? Heck yeah gimme that! Super weapons? Looks like it ticks that box and all. You can read a little background about how it all came together in their Steam announcement.

Check out the new trailer, which really got me hyped for it:

Give me all of that (well maybe not the super weapons) but set in a fantasy world with modern graphics and storytelling and then I'll agree that the golden age of RTS has returned.

I like me some stale 90s RTS, but that's sort of my issue here: I'm not seeing anything that stands out, it's just about the fetish. I wouldn't mind more of these, but is there enough of a market? Fingers crossed!

I do remember enjoying Command & Conquer back in 1995, but I don't think I got truly hooked on the genre until Total Annihilation launched in 1997, and the graphics in this feel very "early C&C" to me.

Then, the marvellous RTS pinnacle, Battle Zone, arrived in 1998. That was an incredible period in my life, as I'd just started at the firm I still work at today, 30 years later! Good memories playing these games, along with Doom, Quake, Descent and Crusader: No Remorse!

It was a special moment in Battle Zone to finally create your first massive Walker unit and hearing the pilot rumble "For God and Country" as it stopped off to demolish whatever poor target you'd highlighted!

Total Annihilation was probably my one true RTS love. I put the most hours into that one, loved the metal maps. Ah what joy that was. Then onto Spring RTS that turned it all 3D.

It seems to be SP only. Why?
