Ghost of Tsushima gets Steam Deck Verified as the devs push the multiplayer into a DLC

Well, that's certainly one way to get around the Steam Deck rating system isn't it. Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR'S CUT now has the online play split off into DLC. Coming with update 8, the game has now been bumped up to Steam Deck Verified by Valve too with Proton 10.

From the announcement the developers noted they split online play into a free DLC, along with improving the interface on Steam Deck and adding a Steam Deck graphics preset too. Plus some other fixes at the same time.

The problem with Ghost of Tsushima isn't the PSN login, but its use of the PlayStation Overlay, which for some reason just doesn't work with the Proton compatibility layer to run Windows games on Linux systems. It's not entirely clear why and no word from Valve on what's the hold up there either. I think this shows that Valve also need ratings for DLC, not just for the base game, since quite a lot of games have huge expansions DLC that may not run the same as the original game.

Release notes:

  • Ghost of Tsushima (singleplayer) is now Steam Deck verified.
  • Online Multiplayer Legends Mode is now a separate DLC on Steam*.
  • Various user interface optimizations for Steam Deck.
  • Added a Steam Deck graphics preset.
  • Resolved an audio bug that occurred for some players during the Eternal Blue Sky mission.
  • Fixed a crash related to Steam Input.
  • Updated AMD FSR to version 3.1.4
  • When enabling AMD FSR 4 in the driver, the game now also displays this version in the menu and launcher.
  • Various performance optimizations and stability improvements.

* A PlayStation Network Account is required for Legends mode

I kind of weirdly wish more games would do this. I love the focus of a single player game, and if the online elements are entirely separate... good?

Not all games, I guess. Some of them weave the multiplayer quite seamlessly. But still...

It's not like the overlay gets used in many games but it's very confusing why it's an issue in the first place. I doubt they actively block Linux with it.
Does it use a niche Windows feature or something? If it ever gets supported, I would love to know what the issue was.

I would assume the Playstation overlay calls some Windows API that's not implemented in Wine/Proton, and that's why it's not working yet?
